Tesla has secured showroom spaces in Mumbai and Delhi, marking a major step in its India expansion. The Mumbai showroom is in Maker Maxity, BKC, spanning 3,000 sq. ft. at a monthly rent of INR 35 lakh, potentially setting a record in the auto sector. In Delhi, Tesla's 4,000 sq. ft. showroom in Aerocity is leased at INR 25 lakh per month from Brookfield. These moves follow Elon Musk's discussions with PM Narendra Modi, highlighting Tesla's growing interest in India's auto market. With hiring underway, Tesla's official market entry seems imminent.
Tesla has secured showroom spaces in both Mumbai and Delhi as part of its expansion plans in India. The company has finalised a showroom in Mumbai's Maker Maxity, a mixed-use development in the Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC), at a monthly rent of approximately INR 35 lakh. The showroom, covering around 3,000 square feet, is located on the ground floor of a commercial tower within Maker Maxity. In addition to the showroom space, the lease includes a few parking spaces for vehicles.
BKC is regarded as India's most expensive commercial real estate hub, and industry insiders have suggested that this deal may represent the highest showroom rental transaction in the automotive sector to date. Tesla's decision to establish a presence in such a prime location highlights the company's strategy to position itself in high-end commercial areas to cater to a premium customer base.
In addition to the Mumbai showroom, Tesla has also secured a space in Delhi. The showroom will cover approximately 4,000 square feet in the Aerocity area, near Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGI). The showroom, situated in a property owned by Brookfield, has been leased at a monthly rent of around INR 25 lakh.
Brookfield's involvement in the Aerocity property follows a series of transactions in recent years. In April 2023, Bharti Enterprises Limited (BEL) transferred its 51% stake in Rostrum Realty to the Brookfield Group. By June 2024, BEL had transferred the remaining stake to Brookfield India Real Estate Trust, which is sponsored by Brookfield Group.
Tesla's expansion into India follows discussions between Tesla CEO Elon Musk and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi during Modi's visit to the United States last month. The two leaders reportedly spoke about advancements in space, mobility, and technology. Sources familiar with the company's plans have previously stated that Tesla has been scouting for showroom spaces in India since late 2023, after temporarily halting its market entry plans in 2022.
Further indicating its commitment to establishing operations in India, Tesla recently posted job advertisements for 13 mid-level positions, including roles related to store management and customer relations. These developments suggest that Tesla is actively working towards launching its vehicles in the Indian market, which is the third-largest automotive market globally.
