Synopsis

The Greater Ludhiana Area Development Authority (GLADA) conducted an eviction drive in Sector 40, Chandigarh Road, removing illegal occupants from three low-income group flats. These flats were part of a court case over unauthorized occupancy. GLADA initially built 319 flats, of which 82 were illegally taken over. After previous evictions, only three units remained occupied, which were cleared by breaking locks and sealing the flats. This effort is part of GLADA's wider crackdown on illegal housing and encroachments. The authority continues to issue warnings and demolish unauthorized settlements, ensuring that government housing is used lawfully and benefits rightful beneficiaries.

The Greater Ludhiana Area Development Authority (GLADA) conducted an eviction drive earlier this week, removing illegal residents from three low-income group flats in Sector 40 of Chandigarh Road. The transfer was part of a court struggle over unauthorized occupancy. According to investigators, GLADA originally built 319 low-income group flats in the region, 82 of which were illegally taken over.

Authorities had previously evacuated 58 of these flats, some in January and others in August last year, with the assistance of police and a duty magistrate. However, three units (834, 847, and 848) remained occupied. The inhabitants had left their belongings inside the flats and locked the door from outside. GLADA authorities used a cutter to break the locks, remove the valuables, and videotaped the entire process. The flats were subsequently sealed, and signs were posted stating that any effort to break the seal and reoccupy the properties would result in legal action.

This eviction is part of GLADA's broader attempt to combat unlawful housing and illegal encroachments in Ludhiana. The government has destroyed illegal colonies in a number of locations in recent months, including Kohara Chowk, Ladian Kalan, and Hussainpura, where developers disregarded earlier warnings. A similar action was taken in Bhamian Khurd and Bhamian Kalan, where eleven illegal settlements were demolished despite protests.

GLADA has been regularly issuing notices under Section 39 of the Punjab Apartment and Property Regulation Act, 1995 (as amended in 2014), warning against unauthorized construction. However, if infractions continue, authorities will proceed with demolitions to enforce urban planning requirements and safeguard homeowners from unscrupulous schemes. The expulsion of unauthorized tenants from Sector 40 is consistent with this enforcement strategy, which ensures that government-built housing is used for its intended purpose.

Authorities hope that by closing the flats and giving strong warnings, they can prevent further incursion and ensure that housing initiatives benefit legitimate beneficiaries. The crackdown emphasizes the significance of regulated real estate development and tough enforcement to ensure order in urban expansion.
