Synopsis

Ahmedabad's CID (crime) branch has arrested Raman Patel, owner of Popular Builders, for his alleged involvement in a decades-old land scam. The case stems from a 2024 complaint by Kanu Thakor, who accused Patel and others of fraudulently acquiring his ancestral land in Makarba using forged documents, including a fake death certificate. Investigations revealed that the land transfer in 1986 was illegal, as the deceased had passed away in 1980. Patel, who has a history of legal troubles, is in police custody until March 11. Authorities aim to uncover a larger land scam network through this case.

According to TNN reports, Raman Patel, the proprietor of Popular Builders, has been taken into custody by Ahmedabad's CID (crime) branch in relation to a land scam that dates back several decades. After an inquiry into a case filed at the CID Crime Ahmedabad zone police station last year, Patel was arrested earlier this week at approximately 9:45 p.m. The claims are related to criminal conspiracy and forgery, and they are covered by IPC sections 465, 467, 468, 471, 474, and 120(B), according to a statement issued by CID officials.

The case started when Kanu Thakor filed a complaint in August 2024, alleging that Patel and seven other people had obtained his ancestral land in Makarba through fraud. Investigations reveal that the defendants fabricated a death certificate and Thakor's grandmother's thumb impression in order to transfer title of the land in 1986. However, the transaction was legally impossible because documents showed that she had died in 1980. After Patel was brought before the court, CID representatives requested that he be placed under custody remand so that they could do additional research. Police detention was granted by the court until March 11.

This is not the first time Patel has been apprehended by the law. According to reports, he has been associated with four other police cases which resulted in him spending four years in prison. He has also been accused of attempted murder by his daughter-in-law.

Raman Patel's arrest is a major step forward in a land fraud case that hasn't been settled for almost 40 years. The investigation attempts to provide the victims with long-overdue justice by examining evidence of illegal transactions and fake documents. Officials believe that this time around, with the help of this particular case, they will be able to unearth the larger network and people involved in such land scams.
