Navi Mumbai Municipal Transport (NMMT) is set to modernize its fleet by replacing diesel buses with electric and CNG vehicles, backed by a INR 270 crore budget allocation. Currently operating 255 electric buses, NMMT plans to add 140 more next year. Charging stations and CNG refueling points will be installed through PPP and EPC models. The upgrade includes an Intelligent Transport Management System (ITMS) for improved scheduling, tracking, and mobile ticketing. Expanding routes and leasing a commercial complex in Vashi will boost revenue. This initiative aligns with sustainability goals, enhancing public transport efficiency in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region.
Navi Mumbai Municipal Transport (NMMT) is set to overhaul its public transport by replacing the current bus fleet with electric and CNG vehicles. This move is being facilitated via the recent budget allocation of INR 270 for infrastructure upgrades.
Currently the NMMT operates 255 electric buses via central government sponsorship. The transport body intends to increase this capacity by adding 140 vehicles in the coming year. They aim to reduce diesel dependency, shift to cleaner forms of energy and reduce emission.
In order to make this transition easier, charging points for private vehicles will be installed on a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) or Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) basis. CNG refuelling points will also be established in depots and bus stations to make fuel easily accessible to users of public as well as private transport.
As a part of the modernization process, NMMT is planning to enhance its Intelligent Transport Management System (ITMS) for better bus operations. An NMMT senior official reported that the new system will offer better route management, scheduling, and overall convenience to passengers. The proposal includes adding features like passenger information systems, automatic location tracking of vehicles, an automated fare collection system, mobile ticketing, a special mobile application, and open-loop smart cards.
The new transport system is approved by the central government for implementation, funded jointly by central and municipal grants. The core aim is to offer more timely, efficient, and reliable bus services in Navi Mumbai.
To improve financial sustainability, NMMT is looking to expand its bus routes within the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) to attract more passengers. Efforts will be made to ensure strict adherence to bus schedules, supported by a passenger growth campaign. Additionally, a commercial complex at Vashi's Sector 9 is expected to generate INR 32 crore annually through leased spaces.
NMMT's fleet conversion to electric and CNG buses is a laudable move towards a greener and sustainable future. With the help of central and municipal grants, these efforts will go a long way in setting a benchmark for other municipalities in the MMR region.
