Synopsis

The Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA) is anticipated to be inaugurated in May, as confirmed by officials familiar with the matter. The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) recently conducted an assessment of the airport. The latest review indicated that 90 percent of the issues identified previously had been resolved. The airport operator is set to apply for an aerodrome license by the end of February, with the Aeronautical Information Publication (AIP) expected to be approved by early March and published before the end of April. Once this process is completed, the airport is expected to begin operations. The new airport is projected to handle 10-12 million passengers annually, with further expansion plans in place.

The Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA) is expected to be inaugurated in May, according to officials familiar with the development. The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) conducted an on-ground assessment of the airport earlier this week, which included the participation of Vipin Kumar, Chairman of the Airports Authority of India (AAI), Prakash Nikam, Regional Director of the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS), and officials from Adani Airport Holdings (AAHL) and City and Industrial Development Corporation of Maharashtra (CIDCO). The airport is managed by NMIAL, a joint venture between AAHL and CIDCO.

A DGCA official mentioned that the preparedness of NMIA had been reviewed and that the airport management was expected to apply for all necessary permits by early March, which would then be processed by the DGCA. According to aviation regulations, the airport operator can now apply for the aerodrome license, with the DGCA expected to approve the Aeronautical Information Publication (AIP) by early March. AIP certification is essential for ensuring compliance with all necessary safety, operational, and infrastructural standards before the airport can begin commercial operations. The AIP is expected to be published by April-end, and the airport would be ready for operations from mid-May.

In December, concerns had been raised regarding certain aspects of the airport's readiness following a commercial flight validation test conducted with an IndiGo A320 aircraft on runway 08/26. However, the most recent assessment indicated that 90 percent of the identified issues had been addressed.

The new airport is expected to significantly ease congestion at the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA), which currently functions as a single-runway facility. Reports suggest that CSMIA handles approximately 40-50 million passengers annually, operating at full capacity with nearly 950 daily aircraft movements. The new airport in Navi Mumbai has been developed as a much-needed solution to this congestion, with an initial capacity to handle 10-12 million passengers per annum, including 9 million domestic and 3 million international travellers. Additionally, Terminal 2, which is planned for completion by the end of 2028, is expected to accommodate 30 million passengers annually.
