The Maharashtra Airport Development Company (MADC) has intensified efforts to clear land in Shivangaon village for the proposed expansion of Nagpur airport, which includes the construction of a second runway. This drive, expected to conclude within a month, involves demolishing homes that are in the way of the runway. Though compensation was provided in the form of land and cash to displaced residents, many locals claim it was insufficient to rebuild their homes. As demolitions continue, some villagers are salvaging materials from their old homes for use in their new ones at Chinchbhuvan.
The process of handing over Nagpur airport to GMR has gained momentum, with the Maharashtra Airport Development Company (MADC) ramping up efforts to clear land in Shivangaon village for the planned expansion, including the construction of a second runway. This demolition drive, which is expected to wrap up in the next month, is a critical step in making way for the airport's growth.
Sources from MADC have explained that the new runway will pass through Shivangaon, a village where residents were compensated with land in Chinchbhuvan in 2016-17. While many people moved to their new homes, several chose to remain in Shivangaon. Some even rented out their properties or allowed family members to continue living there.
Currently, 13 hectares of land in Shivangaon still need to be cleared of existing structures. MADC has begun demolishing these homes, marking the buildings with a cross on the walls to identify those that are to be removed. As part of the land swap agreement, MADC is transferring about 288 hectares of land to the Indian Air Force (IAF), which will vacate the area near the airport to facilitate the expansion and the construction of new facilities.
A senior official from MADC shared that locals were given alternative plots of land ranging from 1,500 to 2,000 square feet. Families with newly-married sons were allotted an additional 500 square feet. In an effort to ensure a smooth transition, even encroachers were provided land, along with a cash component. However, many locals have expressed dissatisfaction, claiming that the compensation offered was not enough to rebuild their homes.
One resident, Nakul Ambhore, voiced his frustration, stating that the compensation package was inadequate for constructing new homes. As the demolitions continued, many villagers were seen moving bricks and other salvageable materials from their demolished homes, which they plan to use for their new residences in Chinchbhuvan. Trishala Fulzele, a resident in her late fifties, explained that her brother had been allocated land but was unable to build a new house due to financial constraints.
The expansion of Nagpur airport is progressing, with significant efforts being made to clear land for the proposed second runway. However, the process has sparked dissatisfaction among some residents of Shivangaon, who feel that the compensation they received was not sufficient to rebuild their homes. As demolition work continues, many villagers are making efforts to salvage materials from their old homes to use in constructing new ones. The outcome of this expansion project could have long-term implications for both the local community and the future growth of the airport.
