The government has initiated the process to monetise Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited's (BSNL) heritage telecom factory in Kolkata, marking the third attempt to monetise the organisation's properties. Located opposite the Kolkata Race Course, the freehold property includes a heritage building constructed in 1947, with a total area of 52,178 square metres. While previous efforts to monetise BSNL properties in Barrackpore and Madhyamgram were unsuccessful due to a lack of bidders, the Alipore factory's unique heritage aspect is expected to attract interest. BSNL plans to shift the current operations to its larger Kharagpur unit.
The government has taken steps to monetise Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited's (BSNL) telecom factory, which includes a heritage building located in a prime area of Kolkata. This marks the third attempt to monetise BSNL's properties, following unsuccessful attempts with two other assets.
According to a notice published on the National Land Monetization Corporation Limited's website, International Property Consultants (IPCs) are being considered for overseeing the monetisation of BSNL's non-core assets. These assets include land and buildings in Kolkata, with the Alipore factory standing out due to its proximity to landmarks like the Victoria Memorial and the Kolkata Race Course.
The Alipore property, constructed in 1947, spans 52,178 square metres, including 10,014 square metres of heritage space. It was previously used for manufacturing telecom-related equipment but now primarily produces PLB pipes for optical fibre cables. BSNL plans to relocate this production to its larger Kharagpur factory, leaving the Alipore factory non-operational once a bidder is finalised.
BSNL officials have emphasised that heritage laws will be strictly adhered to during the monetisation process, ensuring the preservation of the property's historical value. Despite past failures to monetise properties in Barrackpore and Madhyamgram due to a lack of interest from bidders, the government is hopeful for a better outcome with the Alipore property.
The monetisation of BSNL's heritage property in Alipore, Kolkata, reflects the government's ongoing efforts to maximise the value of non-core assets. With heritage laws ensuring the preservation of the property's historical aspects, the outcome of this monetisation attempt will be crucial in determining the future of BSNL's asset management strategy.
