Synopsis

The southbound connector of Mumbai's coastal road, linking the Bandra-Worli Sea Link (BWSL) to Marine Drive, is set to open to the public from January 26. This marks a significant milestone in the city's infrastructure. While some interchanges and the sea-facing promenade are slated for completion in the coming months, the project, which began in October 2018, has already demonstrated a substantial reduction in travel time and fuel consumption. With an INR 13,983 crore investment, this initiative is expected to boost commuting and recreational activities for residents.

The southbound connector of the Mumbai coastal road, connecting the Bandra-Worli Sea Link (BWSL) to Marine Drive, is scheduled to open to the public from January 26. This marks the final phase of the coastal road project. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis is expected to inaugurate the new connector, which aims to streamline travel for commuters.

A civic source stated that northbound travellers can directly access the BWSL via the coastal road connector, while southbound travel previously required a detour through Khan Abdul Gaffar Khan Marg in Worli. With the completion of the southbound arm, commuters can now travel seamlessly from the sea link to Marine Drive.

The southbound carriageway from Marine Drive to the Sea Link was opened for use last year in mid-September. Spanning 10.58 km, the coastal road stretches between the Princess Street Flyover at Marine Drive and the Worli end of the BWSL.

Some sections, such as interchanges in Worli (Arm7), Haji Ali, and an underpass at Omkar Circle in Worli, are still under construction and are expected to be finished by May. These additions will provide direct access to the sea link and both arms of the coastal road. Additionally, the underpasses will connect to a new 7.5-km sea-facing promenade stretching from Priyadarshini Park at Breach Candy to the Worli end of the sea link. This promenade, designed for walkers and joggers, will be nearly twice the length of the existing Marine Drive promenade.

The Mumbai coastal road project continues to transform urban commuting and recreational opportunities. Initiated in October 2018, the coastal road project represents a INR 13,983 crore investment by the BMC. It has already delivered notable benefits, including a 70% reduction in travel time and a 34% decrease in fuel consumption.
