The Maharashtra government has revived the Shaktipeeth Highway project, previously stalled due to land acquisition protests. The INR 80,000-crore project will connect Nagpur to Goa via an 802-kilometre route, passing through 11 districts. During a recent meeting, Fadnavis emphasised the project's economic, tourism, and connectivity benefits, urging expedited implementation. He also directed timely completion of other key infrastructure, including stretches on the Mumbai-Nagpur Samruddhi Expressway and Mumbai-Pune Expressway. The government prioritised high-quality construction, advanced technology, and transparency, along with improved passenger facilities and land acquisition through the BOT model.
Six months after the previous Mahayuti government placed the 802-kilometre Shaktipeeth Highway project on hold due to widespread opposition from stakeholders, the newly sworn-in Maharashtra government has decided to revive the ambitious initiative. Officials from the Public Works Department (PWD) have been instructed to resume planning for the project, which aims to connect Nagpur to Goa.
The INR 80,000-crore expressway will stretch from Pavnar in Wardha district to Patradevi in Sindhudurg, passing through 11 districts, including Wardha, Yavatmal, and Kolhapur. Of the required 8,419 hectares, nearly 8,100 hectares comprise private agricultural land, leading to prolonged protests from farmers and political leaders.
He stressed the highway's potential to enhance communication, boost tourism, and create business opportunities. The Chief Minister also highlighted the importance of maintaining high-quality standards in construction to support economic growth and tourism in the state.
Additionally, Fadnavis directed the prompt completion of key infrastructure projects, including the Mumbai-Nagpur Samruddhi Expressway and the Mumbai-Pune Expressway, along with upgrades to the Nashik-Mumbai National Highway. Plans for a new seven-storey building in the Mantralaya area were also initiated.
To ensure transparency and efficiency, Fadnavis emphasised adopting advanced technology and implementing the land acquisition process via the Build-Operate-Transfer (BOT) model. Public Works Minister Shivendrasinh Raje Bhosale reiterated the commitment to high-quality construction, prioritising passenger facilities such as restrooms for women on highways.
The revival of the Shaktipeeth Highway project marks a significant step towards enhancing Maharashtra's infrastructure and connectivity. By addressing stakeholder concerns and implementing a transparent, technologically advanced approach, the government aims to ensure quality and timely completion of the project. This initiative is expected to stimulate economic growth, boost tourism, and provide better communication facilities across the state. Complementary efforts to upgrade existing infrastructure further underscore the government's commitment to fostering holistic development and improving passenger convenience.
