Indore, in collaboration with the Energy Swaraj Foundation, launched the 100-day 'Indore Climate Mission' to become the world's first energy-literate city. Aimed at reducing electricity consumption, carbon emissions, and promoting sustainability, the mission emphasizes "invisible waste" (carbon-related) reduction. Indore Mayor Pushyamitra Bhargava highlighted the city's legacy of environmental leadership, with a Climate Action Plan and efforts to cut electricity use by 50%. Founder Prof. Chetan Singh Solanki announced plans to educate 3-5 lakh residents on energy literacy, encouraging 7-10% voluntary reductions in energy use. The mission, including "Climate Chaupal" events, aims to save 20 crore electricity units in one year.
Indore, in collaboration with the Energy Swaraj Foundation, has embarked on an ambitious initiative, the 100-day 'Indore Climate Mission,' with the goal of becoming the world's first energy-literate city. This pioneering effort is focused on significantly reducing electricity consumption, lowering carbon emissions, and serving as a model for other cities aiming to address climate challenges.
Indore's commitment to sustainability is well-established, having been named India's cleanest city seven times and creating its own Climate Action Plan. Mayor Pushyamitra Bhargava emphasized that this new initiative reflects the unwavering dedication of the city's residents and the Municipal Corporation to environmental preservation. Highlighting the need for innovative solutions, Bhargava explained that while each household in Indore produces about 450 grams of visible waste daily, the invisible carbon-related waste amounts to a staggering 27 kilograms per day. To address this often-overlooked issue, the mission will introduce groundbreaking measures to reduce the city's carbon footprint and contribute to mitigating global warming.
A key objective of the initiative is a 50% reduction in Indore's electricity consumption between December 1, 2024, and March 10, 2025. To achieve this, the program will focus on spreading energy literacy among the city's residents, reaching an estimated 3-5 lakh people. Professor Chetan Singh Solanki, founder of the Energy Swaraj Foundation, emphasized the importance of educating citizens about the direct link between energy usage and carbon emissions. By raising awareness, the mission aims to inspire behavioral changes and encourage energy-saving habits. Residents will be urged to voluntarily reduce their electricity usage by 7-10%, creating a collective impact that aligns with the mission's broader goals.
In addition to fostering awareness, the initiative will establish measurable outcomes. One major milestone includes saving approximately 20 crore units of electricity within the next year. This reduction not only demonstrates the potential for large-scale energy conservation but also serves as a testament to the power of community collaboration in tackling environmental challenges.
Central to the mission is the 'Climate Chaupal,' a platform designed to engage and educate citizens on topics such as climate change, sustainable living, and energy conservation. By providing accessible information and practical solutions, the Chaupal aims to equip residents with the tools they need to make informed decisions and adopt greener lifestyles.
The Indore Climate Mission is more than an environmental program; it is a testament to the city's leadership and vision for a sustainable future. By addressing both visible and invisible waste, Indore is setting a benchmark for cities worldwide, proving that collective action can drive meaningful change.
