Kolkata Metro authorities have proposed a 1.6 km extension of the Joka-Esplanade Purple Line to include a new station at Eden Gardens. The Kolkata Metro authorities have put forth an exciting proposal to extend the Joka-Esplanade Purple Line by 1.6 kilometers to include a new station at Eden Gardens. This development is set to benefit not only cricket and football fans but also thousands of daily commuters traveling to nearby workplaces, including those around Strand Road, Babughat, Calcutta High Court, and BBD Bag. The proposal has been submitted to the Railway Board for approval. Initially, the plan was to connect Eden Gardens to Esplanade via a long subway. However, the new plan suggests a direct metro station, allowing commuters to access the city's extensive rapid transit network more conveniently. This change is expected to ease congestion and provide a faster travel option for residents and visitors alike.
Currently, the 14.4-kilometer Purple Line features eight elevated stations and four underground stations, with the operational segment running 8 kilometers from Joka to Majerhat. The eighth station at Mominpur is under construction. The line will transition to an underground section that includes stations at Khidderpore, Victoria, Park Street, and Esplanade. If the extension to Eden Gardens is approved, the terminal station will be located near Gate No. 1 of Eden Gardens, close to the Mohun Bagan football ground.
One significant aspect of this proposal is the potential environmental benefit. The planned shift of the Purple Line's underground crossover point towards Strand Road could help preserve several trees near Manohar Des Tarag that would have otherwise been cut down. The existing plan for a major Metro hub at Esplanade, which includes a commercial plaza and underground parking, will remain intact. According to Metro sources, the Eden Gardens extension will serve as an important offshoot of the Joka-Esplanade corridor, reinforcing Esplanade's role as a central hub in the metro network.
This extension is particularly timely, as the Kolkata Metro is already serving around 750,000 passengers daily. The addition of the Eden Gardens station will make it easier for people from various neighborhoods, including HC, Millennium Park, and Strand Road, to access the metro system.
The decision to replace the proposed subway with a transportation tunnel aligns with the goal of improving accessibility for visitors to Eden Gardens and the surrounding areas. Commuters will benefit from a more direct route, reducing the time and effort required to reach their destinations. The new station will enhance the overall connectivity of the metro network, making public transport a more attractive option for residents and tourists alike.
