The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) plans to build two new roads connecting S V Road and Anand Road near Malad railway station to alleviate traffic congestion. Spanning 9-15 meters in width, the roads aim to streamline traffic flow and reduce travel time for over 8,000 hourly commuters. Encroachments along the proposed routes will be cleared legally. The new roads, each spanning 9-15 meters in width, will directly link Malad station to key arterial routes. One of the roads will pass near Somaiya Chambers, while the other will run alongside Malad Shopping Centre. The project is part of a larger effort to enhance connectivity and streamline traffic flow around Malad station, which sees heavy vehicular and pedestrian movement daily. Encroachments along the proposed routes are set to be removed through a systematic and legal process.
The BMC's initiative comes after a study conducted by IIT Bombay highlighted the urgent need for better traffic management in the area. According to the study, Malad station handles a footfall of over 8,000 passengers per hour, with the narrow existing roads unable to accommodate the volume. Illegal hawking and encroachments have further worsened the traffic situation, prompting authorities to expedite the project.
Once completed, the new roads are expected to provide direct access for travelers moving between Malad station and S V Road. This will not only improve traffic flow but also reduce travel time for thousands of daily commuters. The project also aims to distribute vehicular movement more evenly across multiple routes, thereby easing the burden on existing roads such as Kasturba Road, Parekh Road, and Sainath Road.
The civic body is also considering widening these adjacent roads to complement the new construction. By integrating these improvements, the BMC hopes to create a more efficient traffic network in Malad, benefiting both residents and commuters.
Union Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal, who reviewed the project on January 4, expressed confidence in its timely completion. He stated that construction is expected to begin shortly and will be completed within three to four months.
The BMC's focus on reducing congestion near Malad station aligns with its broader vision of improving urban mobility across Mumbai. The successful implementation of this project could set a precedent for similar initiatives in other congested areas of the city.
