Synopsis

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has assured that construction on crucial bridges, including Carnac, Vikhroli, and Gokhale, will be completed before the monsoon. Additional Municipal Commissioner (Projects) Abhijeet Bangar stated that all bridges would be opened for traffic within the stipulated timeframe. BMC Chief Bhushan Gagrani reviewed the progress and called for better coordination among departments. The Sion flyover, Gokhale Bridge, and Belasis Bridge are also being prioritised, with specific deadlines set for their completion. Efforts are being made to expedite the removal of obstructions, including abandoned structures and commercial establishments, to ensure timely execution.

Commuters in Mumbai can expect some relief soon, as the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has assured that construction on key bridges, including Carnac, Vikhroli, and Gokhale, will be completed before the arrival of the monsoon. Additional Municipal Commissioner (Projects) Abhijeet Bangar stated earlier this week that all the bridges would be accessible to traffic within the stipulated timeframe.

BMC Chief and Administrator Bhushan Gagrani conducted a review of the bridges department along with Bangar. During the meeting, Bangar stressed the importance of enhanced coordination and meticulous planning to meet the set deadlines. He particularly highlighted the need to expedite the pending work at Sion Railway Station (both East and West sides) and called for collective efforts from various departments to resolve outstanding issues.

Bangar acknowledged the increasing frustration among residents and underscored the necessity for both the railway administration and the BMC to address public concerns. Regarding the Sion flyover project, he instructed officials to accelerate the removal of obstructions on pedestrian bridges, close sewerage pipes, relocate BEST vehicles, dismantle public toilets, and take down advertisement boards. He set a definitive timeline for completing these tasks and reaffirmed the commitment to finishing the Sion flyover by the end of December 2026.

For the Andheri East-Western Railway Link, also known as the Gopalkrishna Gokhale Bridge (Rail Overbridge), the second phase of railway-related construction has been completed. Bangar stated that the BMC's work on the limited approach road should conclude by April 2025, enabling the full operation of the Gokhale Bridge by April 30, 2025.

With regard to the Carnac Rail Overbridge (ROB), connecting Central Railway's Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) and Masjid stations, the shifting of the 550-metric-tonne north arm girder is nearly complete. Bangar instructed that all construction work for Carnac Bridge should be expedited, with an aim to complete the project by June 10, 2025, before the onset of the monsoon.

The new cable-stayed Bellasis Bridge in south Mumbai will become operational. Located between Mumbai Central and Grant Road in Mumbai, the old Bellasis Bridge was built in 1893. The contract period for the new Belasis Bridge construction extends until April 2026. However, Bangar urged officials to complete the bridge ahead of schedule and make it operational by December 2025. He reported that 12 obstructing structures had already been demolished and instructed that the remaining 12 abandoned buildings be cleared without delay. Additionally, he directed that commercial buildings in the affected area be relocated to appropriate rehabilitation sites.

For the Vidyavihar Bridge, a critical transport link, plans are in place to remove certain structures on the east side of the railway station and construct a robust ramp on the west side. Alternative routes will also be established to ensure seamless pedestrian movement.

The BMC's commitment to completing these critical infrastructure projects on schedule offers hope to commuters who have been facing significant travel disruptions. With clear timelines set for each project, including the Sion flyover, Gokhale Bridge, Carnac Bridge, and Belasis Bridge, efforts are being intensified to remove obstructions and streamline construction work. If executed as planned, these developments will significantly ease congestion and improve overall connectivity for Mumbai residents.
