India is set to approve upcoming highway projects under the Vision 2047 roadmap, as confirmed by Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari. He assured that sufficient funds are available for highway development, despite a flat budget allocation for the roads ministry for the 2025-26 fiscal year. He highlighted that the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has strong borrowing capacity, with investor confidence reflected in oversubscribed infrastructure investment trusts (InvITs). In 2023-24, the national highway construction rate reached 12,300 km, averaging 34 km per day. Delhi is witnessing significant infrastructure projects worth INR 1 lakh crore, including the Dwarka Expressway and Urban Extension Road-II.
India is on course to approve forthcoming highway projects under the Vision 2047 roadmap, as stated by Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari. He reassured that there is an ample supply of funds for highway development, even though the budget allocation for the roads ministry in the 2025-26 fiscal year remains unchanged.
The minister emphasised that the market is offering sufficient capital for road-building initiatives. He noted that the current budget aims to stimulate economic growth, leading to increased investments and employment opportunities.
Gadkari pointed out that the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has the ability to raise funds when necessary. He described NHAI as a "gold mine" that can comfortably secure funding if required. He further mentioned that the oversubscription of infrastructure investment trusts (InvITs) by seven times within a few hours demonstrates strong investor confidence.
India recorded the construction of 12,300 km of national highways in 2023-24, averaging approximately 34 km per day. This marks the second-fastest pace in the country, only surpassed by the 13,327 km built in 2020-21.
The Bharatmala Scheme, which served as the government's flagship initiative for highway construction until 2023-24, facilitated the accelerated awarding of projects. However, it has not been reintroduced. The minister assured that multiple projects are progressing under Vision 2047 and that the awarding of contracts is proceeding smoothly.
Regarding development plans for the national capital, Gadkari stated that road transport projects amounting to INR 35,000 crore have been completed in Delhi. In total, projects worth INR 65,000 crore are in various stages of completion in the state, while an additional INR 1 lakh crore worth of projects are currently underway in the Delhi-National Capital Region (NCR).
He further mentioned that within a few months, the travel time between Delhi and Dehradun would be reduced to just two hours. The construction of the Dwarka Expressway is halfway completed, and work on the Urban Extension Road-II is also progressing.
These initiatives collectively aim to boost connectivity, economic growth, and job creation across the country.
