The Pune and Pimpri Chinchwad metro network will expand with a budget allocation of INR 838.96 crore for FY 2025-26. Maha Metro will prioritize the PCMC-Nigdi and Swargate-Katraj extensions, ensuring financial stability for ongoing projects. While Phase 1 is operational, pending infrastructure work at Khadki and Range Hills stations continues. Metro ridership reached 160,000 daily commuters in January. Additionally, INR 230 crore has been allocated for Mula-Mutha river pollution abatement, with funds supporting Sewage Treatment Plants (STPs). These initiatives will enhance urban transit, last-mile connectivity, and sustainability, ensuring Pune's continued infrastructural growth.
The metro network in Pune and Pimpri Chinchwad is set for expansion with an allocation of INR 838.96 crore for the 2025-26 fiscal year in the budget. Maha Metro aims to use a significant portion of these funds for the PCMC-Nigdi and Swargate-Katraj extensions while completing unfinished segments of Phase 1. These resources will include contributions from the Union government, disbursed as per project progress. With assured funding, metro development has gained momentum, ensuring that the project will not encounter financial shortages this year.
In October 2024, Maha Metro successfully inaugurated the PCMC building to Swargate and Vanaz to Ramwadi corridors. However, infrastructure developments such as entry and exit points and the construction of Khadki and Range Hills stations remain ongoing. Preliminary groundwork on the Pimpri-Nigdi extension has commenced, while excavation and construction activities for the Swargate-Katraj underground metro line are expected to start within the next two to three months. Officials affirmed that they will allocate funds in phases, focusing on essential works to enhance public access to metro services.
The extended network will integrate more localities in Pune and Pimpri Chinchwad, with plans to complete the Pimpri-Nigdi corridor within the next two and a half years. Metro ridership has surged, with daily commuters on the two operational routes reaching 160,000 in January. These corridors now provide seamless connectivity between the east-west and north-south regions of Pune and Pimpri Chinchwad, improving urban transit.
Commuters have urged Maha Metro to allocate funds toward enhancing last-mile connectivity to metro stations. Sources revealed that Maha Metro is working on strengthening last-mile connectivity and expediting feasibility studies for newly proposed metro corridors. These initiatives aim to enhance urban transit and extend metro accessibility to a wider population.
The central government has allocated INR 230 crore for the Mula-Mutha pollution abatement initiative for 2025-26. The Japan International Cooperation Agency has sanctioned an INR 990.26 crore loan for the project, routed through the central government. Of this, the government has approved INR 841.72 crore, and Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has contributed INR 148.54 crore. PMC sources disclosed that the Centre has already disbursed nearly INR 300 crore, with an additional INR 100 crore in the state government's pipeline.
Another INR 200 crore is expected to reach the state from the Centre within two months, leaving approximately INR 240 crore pending allocation from the committed funds. These financial provisions will accelerate the construction of Sewage Treatment Plants (STPs) this year. PMC officials plan to approve five STPs in July and another five in December. They are awaiting the government resolution for the final STP's land. The project experienced delays due to the unavailability of funds until October 2024.
Pune will witness significant advancements in both metro connectivity and environmental projects, strengthening urban infrastructure and promoting sustainability.
