Maharashtra's Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde revealed plans for a new housing policy aimed at providing affordable homes for senior citizens, working women, students, and mill workers. The policy, to be implemented through the Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority (MHADA), will focus on both affordable and rental housing schemes. Shinde also discussed accelerating stalled redevelopment projects through cluster redevelopment initiatives, similar to the one in Thane. The scheme involves multiple agencies, including the Slum Rehabilitation Authority and Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority. Additionally, a INR 500 crore development plan for the Shri Siddhivinayak Temple was announced.
Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde announced that the state will soon unveil a new housing policy aimed at offering affordable homes to senior citizens, working women, students, and mill workers. The policy, which will be executed by the Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority (MHADA), will focus on both affordable and rental housing schemes. This announcement was made while Shinde was inspecting six redevelopment projects in the Prabhadevi area.
Shinde noted that owning a spacious and comfortable home is a dream for many, but housing limitations often force Mumbaikars to settle in the outskirts of the city. He emphasised that the government is determined to bring people back to Mumbai through cluster redevelopment, thereby making their dreams of homeownership a reality.
Shinde stated that the government is drafting a new MHADA housing policy to cater to working women, senior citizens, and students, with provisions for hostels. He further mentioned that the government's goal is to make Mumbai slum-free. The new policy includes affordable housing, rental housing, and specific provisions for working women, senior citizens, and students.
Stalled redevelopment projects will be expedited through cluster redevelopment, in a manner similar to the initiative in Thane. The scheme will be implemented in collaboration with several agencies, such as the Slum Rehabilitation Authority (SRA), MHADA, Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation (MIDC), Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA), City and Industrial Development Corporation (CIDCO), and the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC).
Shinde highlighted that one of the first large-scale redevelopment projects would involve constructing 17,000 houses in Chembur by the Slum Rehabilitation Authority and the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority. This project is expected to serve as a model for clearing long-pending slum rehabilitation and redevelopment initiatives.
The new housing policy will take into account transportation, infrastructure, and essential amenities to provide a holistic living experience for residents. During the recent lottery draw, 3,662 houses were allocated, with 93,662 applications received. Shinde said the entire process was conducted with complete transparency, from application submission to final allotment.
The District Planning Committee also approved a INR 690 crore draft plan for Mumbai city. Additionally, Shinde unveiled a INR 500 crore development plan for Shri Siddhivinayak Temple to enhance facilities for devotees.
