Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) is set to develop a 37-acre campus at the Kinfra Electronics Manufacturing Cluster in Kochi, an INR 690 crore investment expected to generate 10,000 jobs. Additionally, TCS is seeking 5,000 seats at InfoPark, Kochi, to address immediate operational needs. The Kerala government is facilitating TCS's expansion and reclaiming 246 acres from the stalled Smart City project in Kakkanad for IT firms. Other IT giants like IBM have also expanded in Kochi, with IBM launching India's largest GenAI Innovation Centre. These developments underscore Kerala's rising prominence as an IT hub, attracting major firms and boosting employment opportunities in tier-2 cities.
Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), India's leading software services company, is set to establish a 37-acre campus at the Kinfra Electronics Manufacturing Cluster in Kochi. The project, which is expected to generate around 10,000 jobs, has been confirmed by official sources. The Mumbai-headquartered IT giant is investing INR 690 crore in this initiative, which has been designated for electronics R&D and IT/ITeS purposes. However, specific project details remain undisclosed.
Alongside the campus development, TCS is exploring office space within InfoPark, Kochi, to cater to its immediate need for 5,000 seats. The Kerala government is collaborating with prominent developers in the city's tech hub to assist the company in securing space promptly. The Industries, Law & Coir Minister, P Rajeeve, mentioned that the government is actively facilitating investments by helping firms find suitable locations across technology parks in Kochi, Thiruvananthapuram, and Kozhikode.
Recently, the minister met with Tata Sons Chairman N Chandrasekaran in Mumbai to discuss TCS's ongoing investments in Kerala. The IT giant already has a presence at InfoPark, where several other major technology firms, including IBM, Wipro, and Cognizant, operate.
TCS, the most profitable subsidiary of the Tata Group, reported its third-quarter earnings earlier this month, with India leading business growth by 70.26%, bringing the total revenue to USD 7.5 billion. India accounts for 9.8% of its total business. In rupee terms, TCS posted a revenue of INR 63,973 crore, reflecting a 0.44% decline from the previous quarter, making it one of the slowest-growing Q3 figures in recent years. However, year-on-year revenue and profit growth stood at 5.6% and 5.5%, respectively.
At InfoPark, Kochi, the government has undertaken the expansion of 500 acres of land, while discussions are ongoing to acquire land in Kozhikode for the expansion of the cyberpark due to rising investor interest. Minister Rajeeve remarked that a few years ago, there were uncertainties about demand, but the current outlook has significantly exceeded expectations.
In Kakkanad, the government has resolved to take over the Smart City project, which was originally a joint venture with Dubai-based Tecom Investments. The project was established on a public-private partnership (PPP) model in 2017, but progress has stalled since then. As Tecom Investments is no longer expanding projects outside Dubai, the Kerala government is reclaiming 246 acres of land to allocate it to IT firms. The Smart City project was initially conceptualised in 2011 as a cutting-edge IT township near Kakkanad InfoPark. Tecom Investments, a subsidiary of Dubai Holding LLC, currently holds an 84% stake in the project.
The Kakkanad region has emerged as a high-demand area, with global IT companies expanding their presence. IBM, for instance, has launched two campuses in the past year, further strengthening the region's IT ecosystem.
Last November, IBM, headquartered in the United States, announced the establishment of its largest GenAI Innovation Centre in the country at InfoPark, currently employing approximately 1,500 workers, with the potential to expand to over 5,000 jobs. Kochi has become IBM's fastest-growing campus globally, housing one of its five advanced research labs. This initiative aligns with IBM's strategy to expand beyond tier-1 cities, tapping into the extensive tech talent pool available in emerging tier-2 locations.
These developments collectively highlight Kerala's increasing appeal as a preferred destination for major IT firms, promising substantial employment opportunities and economic growth in the coming years.
