Synopsis

To ease overcrowding at Byculla Zoo, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) plans to establish a bird park in Mulund West. The proposed INR 100 crore facility, spanning four acres, has received provisional approval from the Central Zoo Authority (CZA) and is pending state approval. Designed as an extension of Byculla Zoo, it will house 24 exotic bird species, including black swans, macaws, ostriches, and hornbills. The park will feature themed enclosures, an educational space, and a dedicated healthcare facility for birds. This initiative aims to enhance urban wildlife management, promote avian conservation, and support eco-tourism in Mumbai.

To mitigate overcrowding at the Byculla Zoo, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) plans to establish an alternative tourist attraction-a bird park in Mulund West, located about 35 km from Byculla. The facility, which will house 24 exotic bird species, has received provisional approval from the Central Zoo Authority (CZA), subject to compliance with specific regulations. According to a report by Hindustan Times, the proposal, with an estimated cost of INR 100 crore, has been forwarded to the state Urban Development Department for further processing.

Currently, the Byculla Zoo features two aviaries for terrestrial and aquatic birds. The increase in visitors surpassed expectations, prompting the need for a suburban facility to manage the growing footfall. According to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), the Mulund-based bird park will serve as a satellite facility, functioning as an extension of the Veermata Jijabai Bhosale Botanical Udyan and Zoo, commonly known as the Byculla Zoo.

Spanning a four-acre plot, the park will accommodate approximately 200 birds, representing both regional and endangered species. Some of the notable species expected to be housed here include black swans, black munia, cockatoo galah, ostriches, crowned pigeons, scarlet macaws, red-breasted parakeets, blossom-headed parakeets, white peacocks, and Malabar grey hornbills.

The new park will include themed enclosures such as the Asian Zone, African Zone, Australian Zone, and American Zone, each representing diverse bird species and their native habitats. The park will also feature an interactive space for educational awareness programmes and incorporate an in-house hospital, a quarantine section, and a food management unit to ensure the well-being of the birds.

The proposed bird park in Mulund West represents a significant step toward sustainable urban wildlife management while offering an enriching experience for the public. By alleviating overcrowding at the Byculla Zoo, this facility will not only provide a dedicated space for avian conservation but also foster public awareness about exotic and endangered bird species. As the proposal advances through the approval process, it holds the promise of enhancing biodiversity conservation efforts while catering to the city's growing interest in eco-tourism.
