Kochi Metro Rail Ltd (KMRL) has issued a request for proposal (RFP) to prepare the detailed project report (DPR) for its 18 km Phase III Metro line from Aluva to Angamaly via Kochi airport. The Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs has granted in-principle approval for financial assistance. The project will feature 15 stations, including a 3 km underground section at Nedumbassery. KMRL is also assessing independent corridor feasibility and potential future extensions to Kochi GIFT City. The new line aims to reduce congestion and enhance urban transport, marking a major step in Kochi's infrastructure growth.
Kochi Metro Rail Ltd (KMRL) has taken a significant step towards the development of the Phase III Metro line, which aims to connect Aluva with Angamaly, including a route through the Kochi airport. The KMRL has issued a request for proposal (RFP) for consultancy services to prepare a detailed project report (DPR) for this ambitious project.
This move comes after the urban transport division of the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA) granted in-principle approval for central financial assistance to support the DPR preparation. The approval signals a commitment to enhancing urban transport infrastructure in the region, which is critical for managing the growing population and increasing traffic congestion in Kochi.
The proposed Metro line will span approximately 18 kilometers and is expected to include around 15 stations. The route will begin at Aluva and follow National Highway 544, passing through the Aleena Valavu area and continuing towards the airport via the Kariyad-Airport-Mattoor Road. After reaching the airport, the line will extend along the Angamaly-Airport Road and further along MC Road to Angamaly. Notably, the project will feature a 3-kilometer underground section in Nedumbassery, reflecting KMRL's commitment to minimizing surface disruption in urban areas.
The RFP also highlights an important aspect of the project: the feasibility of implementing the Phase III corridor as an independent line rather than merely extending the existing network from Tripunithura to Aluva. This could allow for more flexibility in future expansions and improvements. Additionally, the DPR consultant will explore the possibility of using different rolling stock compared to the trains currently operating on Phases I and II, which could enhance operational efficiency and passenger experience.
Another significant consideration in the planning process is the potential future extension of the Metro line to the proposed Kochi GIFT City at Ayyampuzha, part of the Kochi-Bengaluru Industrial Corridor. This extension could further integrate Kochi into the larger economic landscape of the region, promoting investment and development in urban infrastructure.
The introduction of this new Metro line is expected to provide a much-needed boost to public transport in Kochi, reducing traffic congestion and improving air quality. As the city continues to grow, efficient public transport options will be essential for sustainable urban development. KMRL's proactive approach in seeking consultancy services for the DPR is a crucial step towards realizing this vision.
In summary, the Phase III Metro line represents a significant investment in Kochi's urban transport future. With the RFP now issued, stakeholders and residents alike are keen to see how this project will unfold and the positive impact it will have on the city's connectivity and development.
