Kochi Corporation authorities have announced that the construction of flats under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY) for the rehabilitation of homeless families from Kalvathy, Koncheri, and Thuruthi Colony has been successfully completed. The construction includes two separate flat complexes built in Thuruthy. The first complex was developed by the Kochi Municipal Corporation as part of its own project, while the second complex was constructed by Cochin Smart Mission Ltd (CSML) on behalf of the corporation.

The first tower, built by the municipal corporation, covers a total area of 10,796.42 sqm and was constructed at a cost of INR 41.74 crore. This tower has 199 residential units, each measuring 300 sq ft. These units are spread over 11 floors, providing a comfortable living space for the residents. Each unit consists of a dining and living area, one bedroom, a kitchen, a balcony, and two toilets, offering essential amenities for modern living.

Additionally, the complex includes 81 parking slots, a sewage treatment plant with a daily capacity of 105 kilolitres (KLD), and three elevators and staircases for easy access. On the first floor, there is a common area of 150 sqm, while the 11th floor offers 800 sqm of shared space. The complex also houses a daycare centre and 14 shop spaces, providing convenience to the residents.

The second tower, built by CSML, spans an area of 10,221 sqm and was constructed at a cost of INR 44.01 crore. The tower consists of 13 floors, with 195 residential units-15 units on each floor. The ground floor accommodates 18 shop spaces, ensuring that the residents have access to commercial services within their community. The tower also offers parking spaces for 68 cars and 17 two-wheelers.

This complex is equipped with three elevators and staircases, making it accessible for all residents. A notable feature is the installation of solar panels on the rooftop's common area, contributing to sustainable living practices. The solar panels will help reduce the building's energy consumption and make the complex more environmentally friendly.

While the construction of both complexes has been completed, the official inauguration is scheduled for March, once the sewage treatment plants are fully operational. This final step will ensure that the infrastructure is in place to meet the needs of the residents and ensure that the flats are ready for occupancy.

The completion of these two housing complexes is a significant achievement for Kochi, addressing the urgent housing needs of the city's homeless population.
