Oyo has announced plans to expand its presence in India's religious tourism sector by adding 500 hotels across prominent pilgrimage destinations, including Ayodhya, Varanasi, Haridwar, and Puri, this year. This strategic move comes in response to the increasing demand for quality accommodations, driven by government initiatives such as the PRASHAD and Swadesh Darshan schemes. Ayodhya, emerging as a key spiritual tourism hub, will witness the addition of over 150 hotels. The initiative aligns with predictions that religious tourism will generate USD 59 billion in revenue by 2028 and create 140 million jobs by 2030.
Travel technology company Oyo has announced its plan to expand its footprint in India's religious hubs by introducing 500 hotels across destinations such as Ayodhya, Varanasi, Prayagraj, Puri, Haridwar, Mathura, Vrindavan, Amritsar, Ujjain, Ajmer, Nasik, and Tirupati. The announcement coincides with a surge in religious tourism, bolstered by government schemes like PRASHAD, the Ramayana Circuit, and Swadesh Darshan, aimed at enhancing tourist infrastructure and attractions.
Oyo revealed plans to add over 150 hotels in Ayodhya, 100 in Varanasi, and 50 each in Prayagraj, Haridwar, and Puri. The company noted that Ayodhya, now a prominent spiritual destination, has become the most-searched location for New Year holidays, with searches on its app witnessing a 39% year-on-year growth. The growing demand follows the inauguration of the Ram Temple.
Oyo India's Chief Operating Officer, Varun Jain, highlighted the company's focus on strategically launching hotels in key religious centres. Jain emphasised the importance of understanding emerging trends, such as shifts in visitor preferences, seasonal travel patterns, and the increasing popularity of lesser-known pilgrimage spots. The company is also collaborating with state tourism departments to align its initiatives with local priorities.
The religious tourism sector is projected to generate USD 59 billion in revenue by 2028 and create 140 million jobs by 2030. This growth underpins Oyo's efforts to cater to the needs of pilgrims and travellers by introducing more 'company-serviced' hotels to ensure a superior guest experience. For the Maha Kumbh period, booking requests in Prayagraj have already surpassed the available inventory, signalling robust demand.
Oyo's insights from its Travelopedia 2024 report indicate that spiritual destinations like Puri, Varanasi, and Haridwar remain popular among travellers. The company's ongoing collaboration with tourism authorities underscores its commitment to supporting India's spiritual tourism growth by offering comfortable, quality accommodations across key religious sites.
