The Chandigarh UT administration is set to launch major infrastructure projects in the upcoming financial year, including the construction of over 600 new housing units and a state-of-the-art District Commissioner (DC) office in Sector 17, costing INR 125 crore. Plans also include INR 50 crore upgrades for heritage auditoriums in government colleges and a new INR 98 crore Police Training Centre in Sarangpur. Housing demand remains high, with new units planned in Dhanas and Sectors 20, 43, and 46. These initiatives aim to enhance administrative efficiency, education, and law enforcement facilities while addressing the city's housing needs.
The Union Territory (UT) administration of Chandigargh is set to embark on significant infrastructure projects in the upcoming financial year, including the construction of over 600 new housing units. These developments aim to address the growing demand for government housing and improve facilities across various sectors.
Among the key projects planned is the construction of a new District Commissioner (DC) office in Sector 17, which will be a state-of-the-art facility. The project is expected to cost around INR 125 crore and is part of a broader initiative to enhance administrative efficiency in the region. Additionally, the UT engineering department will focus on building four new auditoriums in city colleges, upgrading existing facilities, and constructing new hostels to support educational institutions.
The education sector will see significant investments, particularly in upgrading auditoriums at government colleges. Two of these auditoriums, located in the Post Graduate Government College for Girls and another in Sector 11, are recognized as heritage sites and will undergo renovations costing approximately INR 50 crore. This effort underscores the administration's commitment to preserving the city's cultural heritage while enhancing educational infrastructure.
In terms of police training, a new Police Training Centre is planned for the South Campus, alongside the Integrated Rescue Battalion (IRB) in North Campus, Sarangpur. This INR 98-crore project will span 30 acres and include various facilities such as separate hostels for male and female candidates, a stadium, a seminar hall, and an obstacle course for cadet training. These developments aim to provide comprehensive training and support for future police officers.
The housing initiative is particularly noteworthy, as the demand for government housing has surged in recent years, driven by the needs of Chandigarh's residents as well as those from neighboring Punjab and Haryana. The UT administration has identified locations in Dhanas, Sectors 20, 43, and 46 for the construction of new housing units, including 150 houses specifically for police personnel. The administration plans to utilize available land and existing old housing for these projects, as there is limited scope for redevelopment of current housing units.
Currently, Chandigarh has a total of 13,825 housing units across various categories, with a significant portion in the general pool category. However, the demand continues to outpace supply, particularly for certain types of houses. This imbalance highlights the urgency for the administration to expedite housing development to meet the needs of its residents.
As these projects move forward, they are expected to not only improve infrastructure but also enhance the quality of life for residents in Chandigarh. The administration is currently preparing financial and development plans, with construction set to begin following the necessary approvals in the coming financial year. These initiatives represent a strategic approach to urban planning and development, aimed at fostering growth and sustainability in the region.
