Rajkot police have intensified enforcement of the Disturbed Areas Act in the Rajkot West legislative assembly area, uncovering violations in 13 properties during inspections in Ward No. 2. Legal action has been initiated against three landlords for failing to register non-local tenants, a requirement under the Act. Assistant Commissioner Radhika Bharai emphasized the inspections aim to ensure compliance and monitor demographic changes in sensitive areas. The crackdown follows concerns raised about unchecked violations, prompting calls to expand the Act's coverage. Authorities aim to strengthen oversight and maintain social harmony amidst criticism over implementation delays.
Rajkot police have intensified compliance checks under the Disturbed Areas Act, targeting properties in the Rajkot West legislative assembly area. This move uncovered violations across 13 properties during inspections in Ward No. 2. The Gandhigram police, focusing on localities such as Subhash Nagar, Vimal Nagar, Shreeji Nagar, Alka Nagar, and Dhruv Nagar, found breaches of the Act. Legal proceedings have been initiated against three property owners-Tariq Himani (33), Firdosh Sheikh (37), and Shailesh Patel for failing to register their non-local tenants with the police, as mandated by the Act.
Assistant Commissioner of Police (West), Radhika Bharai, stated in a press briefing that these inspections aimed to ensure compliance with the directives issued by the police commissioner. The investigation revealed that three landlords had rented out properties without following proper tenant registration procedures, a key requirement to monitor demographic changes in sensitive areas.
The current crackdown stems from escalating concerns raised by Rajkot West MLA Darshita Shah and local residents. Earlier this week, Shah and community representatives approached Collector Prabhav Joshi, demanding stricter enforcement of the Disturbed Areas Act. Shah highlighted that repeated complaints had been lodged from Wards 1, 2, 3, and 8 regarding unchecked violations. She also called for extending the Act's coverage to other areas in Rajkot West to address similar concerns.
The Act, enacted to regulate property transactions and prevent demographic imbalances in sensitive areas, has faced implementation challenges in Rajkot. Discussions to expand its coverage to additional localities began as early as 2022, with the aim of including more wards to curb unauthorised activities. However, progress has been slow, drawing criticism from lawmakers and citizens alike.
Historically, Rajkot has witnessed instances where violations of the Disturbed Areas Act have led to unrest and raised security concerns. In 2020, for example, local authorities investigated similar cases in Rajkot East, where property transactions without proper permissions sparked tensions. Such incidents have prompted calls for stricter monitoring and enforcement. Shah expressed her dissatisfaction with the lack of timely action, emphasising that unchecked violations undermine the Act's purpose of maintaining social harmony. She reiterated the need for proactive measures and strict penalties for violators to prevent further infractions.
The recent enforcement of the Disturbed Areas Act in Rajkot West underscores the authorities' commitment to addressing long-standing concerns about compliance. By identifying violations and initiating legal proceedings against landlords, the police are working to strengthen regulatory oversight.
