Synopsis

Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) has set a new deadline for bulk waste generators, including large apartments, complexes, and businesses, to comply with waste management rules. By January 15, 2025, these entities must set up on-site composting units to process wet waste and produce fertiliser. This directive applies to establishments generating over 100kg of waste daily, with penalties for non-compliance. Despite the city having over 2,500 bulk waste generators, many have yet to implement the required composting systems. The public can obtain further details on compliance from the MCC website or through email.

The Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC), which has been urging bulk waste generators to comply with regulations by installing on-site composting units, has set a new deadline. The bulk waste generators, including large apartments, complexes, and businesses, must process their wet waste on-site and produce fertiliser by January 15, 2025.

The city corporation is tasked with ensuring that all bulk waste generators comply with the Solid Waste Management Rules, 2016, and the MCC Solid Waste Treatment Bylaws. While there are more than 2,500 bulk waste generators in the city, the majority have not yet implemented on-site composting units.

Establishments such as apartments with over 30 flats, complexes exceeding 5,000 sq. ft., businesses, malls, commercial entities, places of worship, public sector enterprises, private companies, and various departments within the MCC jurisdiction, which generate more than 100kg of waste daily, are required to segregate their waste into three categories - organic, dry, and hazardous. They must then process the wet waste on-site using composting techniques to create fertiliser by January 15, 2025, according to MCC Commissioner Anand CL.

The commissioner also noted that large waste producers failing to manage organic waste on-site by the end of January 2025 would face a fine of INR 15,000, as per the Solid Waste Management Rules, 2016, and the Mangaluru City Corporation Solid Waste Management Bylaws, 2019. For further information, the public can visit the corporation's website at mangalurucity.mrc.gov.in or contact them via email at mcchealth2018@gmail.com, the commissioner added.

MCC's move to enforce on-site composting for bulk waste generators aims to improve waste management in the city. The new deadline of January 15, 2025, mandates large residential and commercial establishments to adopt composting methods to manage their wet waste. Failure to comply with these regulations may result in a fine of INR 15,000. As the deadline approaches, these establishments must take necessary action to avoid penalties. For further guidance, the MCC has provided contact details through their website and email.
