The Rail India Technical and Economic Service (RITES) has revealed plans for a two-phase metro rail project in Bhagalpur. This initiative aims to improve public transportation in the city by establishing east-west and north-south corridors. The project is currently in the planning stage, with detailed studies underway to evaluate its feasibility.

District Magistrate Nawal Kishor Choudhary emphasized the significance of this project during a recent meeting with RITES officials and representatives from the Bhagalpur Municipal Corporation (BMC). The discussions included a comprehensive presentation on the proposed metro routes, which were developed based on traffic surveys, technical assessments, and community feedback. The first phase will feature a 17-kilometrer line with 12 stations, starting from Saidpur and ending at the Bhagalpur railway station. Key locations along this route include Sabour, Bhagelpur College of Engineering, and Tilka Manjhi. A metro depot is planned for Saidpur, covering 20 hectares.

The second phase will consist of a 7-kilometrer line connecting the Bhagalpur railway station to Vastu Vihar Colony. This route will pass through areas such as Mojahipur and Maheshpur, with a depot located at Vastu Vihar on a 12-hectare site. Additionally, RITES is exploring further extensions to include neighborhoods like Chanpanagar and Noorpur, as well as routes that connect to the city bypass and other key areas.

The metro rail project has the potential to transform transportation in Bhagalpur. It aims to alleviate traffic congestion, provide a faster and more affordable public transport option, and reduce pollution. By offering a reliable alternative to road travel, the metro could also lead to fewer traffic accidents. These benefits align with broader goals of sustainable urban development and improved quality of life for residents.

The meeting included several important stakeholders, such as RITES officials and members of the BMC, who expressed strong support for the project. DM Choudhary urged RITES to expedite the preparation of the Comprehensive Mobility Plan (CMP), the Alternative Analysis Report (AAR), and the Detailed Project Report (DPR) to ensure timely progress.

Public interest in the metro project is high, with many residents expressing hope for improved transportation options. As the project moves forward, community engagement will be crucial. Local residents will have opportunities to provide input and stay informed about developments.

In conclusion, the Bhagalpur metro rail project represents a significant investment in the city's infrastructure. As planning continues, the focus will be on creating a modern transportation system that meets the needs of the community while contributing to environmental sustainability. With the right planning and execution, Bhagalpur could soon join the ranks of cities with efficient and effective metro systems.
