The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) has intensified its efforts to recover property tax arrears from residential societies. On Tuesday, 748 properties across the East and South Zones were sealed, and notices were issued to 147 societies warning of water and sewer disconnections for unpaid dues. The AMC also introduced public shaming by affixing stickers on defaulters' properties. It has since recovered Rs. 18.86 lakhs. In the East Zone, the civic body initiated property auctions and added encumbrances to 18 properties, with Rs. 3.29 crore worth of encumbrances recorded over the year. These measures aim to enforce compliance and improve tax recovery.
The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) has escalated measures to recover mounting property tax arrears from residential societies. The property tax department has started sealing properties, issuing warnings, and taking steps to penalise defaulters who fail to clear their dues.
For years, the AMC has struggled with unpaid property taxes, particularly from residential societies. Despite issuing notices and warnings, arrears have continued to accumulate, prompting the department to adopt a tougher stance.
Last week, the AMC sealed 469 properties in the East Zone and 279 in the South Zone. Notices were issued to the chairpersons of 147 societies across these zones, cautioning them that failure to pay outstanding dues would result in water and sewer disconnections.
In addition, the AMC shared lists of defaulters with society chairpersons-120 societies in the East Zone and 27 in the South Zone-asking them to ensure that members settle their dues immediately.
For the first time, the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) has introduced a unique tactic to recover unpaid property taxes - affixing stickers on defaulters' properties. These stickers publicly shame property owners and have already resulted in the recovery of Rs. 18.86 lakhs in outstanding dues.
In the East Zone, the AMC has taken further steps to intensify its recovery efforts. The department has begun the valuation and auction process for 10 properties with long-standing arrears. Additionally, encumbrances have been added to the revenue records of 18 properties, limiting their ability to be sold or transferred until dues are cleared.
Over the past year, the AMC has recorded encumbrances worth Rs. 3.29 crore against 194 properties. These restrictions serve as a strong deterrent, ensuring compliance with tax obligations and preventing defaulters from bypassing payment responsibilities.
The AMC's strict actions are intended to pressure defaulters into clearing their dues by highlighting the consequences of non-payment, such as disconnection of water and sewer services or legal restrictions on properties. These efforts reflect the civic body's focus on recovering overdue taxes and encouraging compliance.
