The Union Cabinet has approved the Rithala-Narela-Kundli metro corridor, connecting Haryana, Delhi, and Uttar Pradesh via a 26.5-km extension of the Delhi Metro's Red Line. The corridor, with 21 stations, will enhance connectivity to Narela and Rohini, supporting housing and educational developments. Notably, it marks the sixth NCR city connected by the Delhi Metro. Other ongoing projects include the Lajpat Nagar-Saket G Block and Inderlok-Indraprastha extensions and 65 km of Phase IV priority corridors, such as the Pink, Golden, and Magenta Lines, expected to open in phases by 2026. These expansions aim to ease travel and boost regional growth.
The Union Cabinet recently approved the Rithala-Narela-Kundli metro corridor, which will become the sixth city in the National Capital Region (NCR) to be connected by the Delhi Metro, after Noida, Gurgaon, Ghaziabad, Bahadurgarh, and Faridabad. This new corridor will be an extension of the Red Line, which already connects Rithala to Shaheed Sthal, and will be the first-ever metro corridor to link Haryana and Uttar Pradesh via Delhi.
The new metro extension will cover a total length of 26.5 kilometres and include 21 stations. It will also offer a significant connectivity boost to the sub-cities of Narela and Rohini, which are seeing substantial development in housing projects and educational institutes. Notably, there will be no interchange stations on the Kundli extension, with important stations including seven sectors of Rohini, Barwala, Sanoth, New Sanoth, Bawana industrial area, Anaaj Mandi, Narela DDA Sports Complex, Narela Village, Depot Station, and Narela Sector-5.
In March, the Cabinet had also approved the Lajpat Nagar to Saket G Block and Inderlok to Indraprastha metro corridors, which are extensions of the Golden and Green lines, respectively. These corridors are still in the pre-tendering phase, with work ongoing to obtain the necessary statutory approvals. Additionally, DMRC is constructing 65 km of priority corridors under Phase IV, including the Janakpuri West to RK Ashram, Majlis Park to Maujpur, and Aerocity to Tughlaqabad lines. The 12.3-km Majlis Park to Maujpur (Pink Line) corridor is expected to be ready by 2025, while the Aerocity to Tughlaqabad (Golden Line) and Janakpuri West to RK Ashram (Magenta Line extension) are likely to be completed by 2026. However, DMRC plans to open sections of these corridors in phases, with the Janakpuri West to Krishna Park Extension section expected to open soon.
The approval of the Rithala-Narela-Kundli metro corridor marks a significant development in the expansion of Delhi Metro's network, enhancing connectivity between Haryana, Delhi, and Uttar Pradesh. The project will not only serve as a vital transport link but also boost economic and social growth in the regions of Rohini and Narela. With continued progress in DMRC's Phase IV projects, the metro network's expansion promises to ease travel and support the region's ongoing development. The phased opening of sections will provide incremental benefits to commuters in the coming years.
