Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently inaugurated two significant infrastructure projects in Delhi, aimed at improving connectivity and reducing commute times. These include the Delhi-Meerut Namo Bharat service, featuring a 13-kilometre stretch with semi-high-speed trains, and a section of the Delhi Metro's Magenta Line Phase-IV extension. The Namo Bharat service promises to cut travel time between Delhi and Meerut to under an hour upon full completion by 2025. Meanwhile, the Metro extension, part of a broader network expansion, reflects the growing commitment to enhancing urban transportation.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently inaugurated two major infrastructure projects designed to improve Delhi's connectivity. He launched the New Ashok Nagar-Sahibabad stretch of the Namo Bharat service, offering direct links between Delhi and Meerut, and extended the Delhi Metro's Magenta Line.
The 12-kilometre operational stretch on the Delhi-Meerut corridor, connecting Anand Vihar and New Ashok Nagar, required an investment of approximately INR 4,600 crore. This project reduces travel time between New Ashok Nagar and Meerut South to under 40 minutes. Of the newly opened 13 kilometres, 6 kilometres are underground, featuring Anand Vihar as a key station.
Namo Bharat trains, manufactured by French company Alstom, can reach speeds of 160 kilometres per hour, with a design speed of 180 kmph. The current operational stretch of the corridor spans 55 kilometres, comprising 11 stations. By 2025, the corridor, fully connecting Sarai Kale Khan to Meerut, is expected to accommodate 800,000 daily passengers.
The Delhi Metro's Magenta Line also saw the opening of a 2.8-kilometre section between Janakpuri West and Krishna Park Extension, an INR 1,200 crore project. Initial services on this section will operate at 16-minute intervals. The complete Magenta Line extension to RK Ashram Marg is scheduled for phased completion by 2026.
An official said that as part of the Phase-IV expansion, the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) is constructing 86 kilometres of new lines across five different corridors in the national capital.
Three corridors --- Janakpuri West to RK Ashram Marg, Majlis Park to Maujpur and Aerocity to Tughlakabad --- are under construction, the other two new corridors --- Lajpat Nagar to Saket-G Block and Indraprastha to Inderlok --- are in the pre-tendering stages.
During a public address in Delhi, Modi highlighted India's rapid metro expansion, growing from 248 kilometres across five cities in 2014 to over 1,000 kilometres in development today. He emphasised metro services now operate in 21 cities, underscoring the government's focus on modernising urban transportation.
Modi also inaugurated two urban redevelopment projects -- the World Trade Centre at Nauroji Nagar and the General Pool Residential Accommodation (GPRA) Type-II quarters at Sarojini Nagar. The government said the World Trade Centre transformed the area by replacing more than 600 dilapidated quarters with state-of-the-art commercial towers, offering around 34 lakh square feet of premium commercial space with advanced amenities.
The inauguration of the Namo Bharat service and Delhi Metro Magenta Line extension marks a significant step towards improving inter-city and intra-city connectivity in the National Capital Region. With reduced commute times, advanced infrastructure, and expanded metro services, these projects are expected to enhance mobility for millions of commuters. As India's urban transport landscape evolves, these developments demonstrate the government's commitment to fostering efficient, sustainable, and modern transit solutions.
