India has committed INR 29 crore to the rehabilitation of the Karainagar Boatyard in Sri Lanka's Northern Province. The project, undertaken by the Cey-Nor Foundation Ltd under the Ministry of Fisheries, will involve civil works, installation of equipment, and services to revitalise the facility. The rehabilitated boatyard aims to enhance local fishermen's livelihoods, generate employment, and boost the fisheries sector. With a development assistance portfolio of over USD 5 billion, India has undertaken numerous people-focused projects in Sri Lanka, including housing, cultural, and infrastructure developments.
India has committed INR 29 crore to develop the Karainagar Boatyard located in the Northern Province of Sri Lanka, according to a statement from the Indian High Commission made earlier this week. This initiative aims to rehabilitate the boatyard managed by the Cey-Nor Foundation Ltd, which functions under the Ministry of Fisheries, Aquatic and Ocean Resources and is incorporated within the Ministry of Finance, Planning, and Economic Development. An agreement was formalised with the exchange of an MoU between the Indian High Commissioner to Sri Lanka, Santosh Jha, and the former Sri Lankan High Commissioner to India, Kshenuka Dhireni Senewiratne, earlier. The project will encompass civil works and the installation of plants, machinery, equipment, materials, and services. Once operational, the refurbished boatyard is expected to strengthen the livelihoods of local fishermen, create new employment opportunities in the region, and contribute to the supply of quality fisheries products.
India's development cooperation with Sri Lanka, which exceeds USD 5 billion, includes initiatives aimed at fostering community welfare. Past projects in the Northern Province include the construction and renovation of over 41,000 houses, a cultural centre in Jaffna promoting reconciliation, and improvements to Kankesanthurai Port. Efforts also extended to educational and healthcare infrastructure enhancements across Jaffna, Kilinochchi, Mullaithivu, and Vavuniya. Other contributions include restoring the Thiruketeeswaram Temple and supporting the agricultural and fishing communities with equipment like boats, nets, and freezers.
India's investment in the Karainagar Boatyard signifies its commitment to strengthening ties with Sri Lanka and supporting local communities. By addressing key infrastructure needs and focusing on livelihood enhancement, this project reflects India's broader strategy of people-centric development in the region. Alongside previous initiatives across housing, culture, and infrastructure, this effort underscores the enduring partnership between the two nations and India's role in promoting socio-economic development in Sri Lanka.
