The Gelephu Mindfulness City project in Bhutan, championed by King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck, promises to redefine regional connectivity and development, with Assam playing a pivotal role. Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced plans for a six-lane highway and a railway connecting Bongaigaon and Gelephu, enhancing bilateral trade and tourism. Additionally, Bhutan's proposal to share water resources with Assam for irrigation and renewable energy marks a step towards sustainable growth. The collaboration aims to position Assam as an investment hub complementing Gelephu's luxury-centric vision, fostering long-term economic synergies between the two regions.
The Gelephu Mindfulness Project in Bhutan is expected to benefit both Bhutan and Assam, with Assam looking to attract investments linked to the project. Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma recently highlighted its importance for the region.
During a recent visit to Bhutan, CM Sarma outlined plans for key infrastructure projects, including a six-lane highway and a railway track connecting Bongaigaon and Gelephu. These projects are awaiting final approvals and are anticipated to enhance connectivity, supporting Bhutan's Gelephu Mindfulness City initiative, a billion-dollar endeavour envisioned to attract global elites and promote luxury living.
CM Sarma emphasised that Assam could serve as a complementary market to Gelephu. Highlighting Bhutan's King's vision, he noted that while Gelephu would cater to affluent residents, Assam could attract investments, fostering a collaborative rather than competitive relationship. The Chief Minister also revealed plans for luxury rail services, potentially including the Vande Bharat Express, and the expansion of Guwahati Airport to match international standards, ensuring seamless transit for tourists and investors.
Bhutan's offer to share water resources with Assam for irrigation and renewable energy projects reflects a shared commitment to sustainable development. CM Sarma hailed this partnership as transformative, offering long-term benefits for both regions.
The bilateral relationship is further strengthened by Bhutan's intent to utilise Assam's land ports, such as Golokganj, for trade with Bangladesh, reducing reliance on traditional routes and stimulating economic activity in border areas. This collaboration aligns with a long-term regional development vision encouraged by External Affairs Minister Dr S. Jaishankar.
With Bhutanese leaders planning a visit to Assam in 2025, the partnership between the two regions is set to deepen, promising advancements in trade, infrastructure, and resource management. As the partnership deepens, the long-term vision promises not just economic synergy but also cultural and developmental milestones, paving the way for a brighter future in the Northeast.
