The Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) is urging property owners to take advantage of its property tax rebate scheme before the upcoming deadline. Those who pay their full property tax for FY 2024-25 online will receive a 10% rebate, while offline payments qualify for a 5% rebate. The initiative, introduced under the guidance of Municipal Commissioner Abhijeet Chaudhari, has seen a positive response. Meanwhile, NMC has taken action against defaulters, issuing notices and attaching properties valued at INR 2.75 crore, granting a 21-day window for dues clearance.
With just days left to avail of the property tax rebate, the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) is urging property owners to take advantage of the offer before it expires. The property tax rebate scheme allows those who pay their full property tax for the financial year 2024-25 online by December 31 to receive a 10% discount. For those choosing to make payments offline, a 5% rebate is available.
Launched under the leadership of Municipal Commissioner and Administrator Abhijeet Chaudhari, this initiative has received an enthusiastic response from property holders. According to Deputy Commissioner (Revenue) Milind Meshram, citizens are encouraged to act swiftly and make the most of this opportunity to reduce their tax burden.
The scheme, which aims to boost online tax payments and ease the collection process, has proven popular, with many property owners opting to pay early to benefit from the rebates. This rebate initiative is seen as a step towards enhancing tax compliance and encouraging prompt payments, which, in turn, can help the municipal corporation maintain essential public services.
However, while some have embraced the scheme, NMC's property tax department in the Mangalwari zone has had to take action against those failing to clear their dues. Notices were issued to 11 property owners who collectively owed INR 30.96 lakh in property taxes. Out of these, eight owners paid off their outstanding amounts, contributing INR 17.08 lakh to the NMC's coffers. Unfortunately, three property owners did not pay their dues, prompting the NMC to take more severe action by attaching their properties. These properties, valued at INR 2.75 crore, have now been marked for possible auction. The defaulters have been granted a 21-day period to settle their outstanding payments. If they fail to do so, their properties will be put up for auction to recover the owed amount.
In a similar vein, the NMC's Hanuman Nagar zone also issued notices to property tax defaulters, taking similar measures to ensure compliance. The corporation is working to recover taxes through enforcement measures, sending a clear message that failure to pay taxes will not be tolerated. The NMC's actions in both Mangalwari and Hanuman Nagar zones highlight its commitment to ensuring property tax compliance and addressing defaulters. These efforts reflect the NMC's broader strategy to boost revenues for the city's development, with property tax being a significant source of funding for municipal services.
The Nagpur Municipal Corporation's property tax rebate scheme offers a valuable opportunity for property owners to reduce their tax burden through timely payments. The initiative has been well-received, particularly with the attractive 10% rebate for online payments. However, the NMC is also taking firm action against tax defaulters, demonstrating that the corporation is serious about recovering outstanding dues. While many property owners have embraced the rebate scheme, defaulters in various zones are facing severe consequences, including property attachments. With the deadline fast approaching, property owners are urged to settle their taxes promptly to benefit from the rebate and avoid further penalties or property seizure.
