Synopsis

Two United Kingdom universities-Queen's University Belfast and Coventry University-have applied to establish campuses in GIFT City, Gujarat, joining two Australian institutions already operating there. Queen's University, a member of the prestigious Russell Group, plans to commence with postgraduate programmes and research facilities, potentially expanding to undergraduate courses. Coventry University, renowned for its global reach, aims to leverage its expertise and foster partnerships in India. This development aligns with the International Financial Services Authority's relaxed regulatory framework for foreign universities, enhancing India's academic and research landscape.

Two renowned universities from the United Kingdom, Queen's University Belfast and Coventry University, are preparing to establish their international campuses in GIFT City, Gujarat. This move follows the earlier initiatives of Australian universities setting up similar operations in the area.

The International Financial Services Authority (IFSCA) approved Queen's University Belfast's proposal earlier this week, making it the third foreign institution to secure a campus in GIFT City. The university, based in Northern Ireland and nearly two centuries old, ranks among the top 200 globally for impact and sustainability. As a Russell Group member, Queen's represents the UK's elite research institutions. Plans include initiating with 800 postgraduate students and expanding to research arms and possibly undergraduate programmes. Notably, over 1,000 Indian students are already enrolled at Queen's among its 24,000-strong student body.

Coventry University, established in 1843, has also applied to set up a campus at GIFT City. Known for its international presence with campuses in Egypt, Poland, Morocco, and Kazakhstan, Coventry University launched its India Hub in Delhi earlier this year. This hub collaborates with Indian academia and industry to address global issues such as climate change and economic development. Coventry's campus is expected to build on this foundation, further strengthening ties with India.

The IFSCA introduced its International Branch Campus Regulations in October 2022 to facilitate foreign universities' operations in GIFT City. These regulations allow institutions to repatriate funds in a favourable regulatory environment and exclude them from local infrastructure norms applicable to Indian universities. Universities can offer specialised courses in fields such as financial management, fintech, and STEM disciplines.

Two Australian universities have already established campuses in GIFT City. Deakin University welcomed its first cohort of 45 students earlier this year for a postgraduate course in business analytics and cybercrime. In November, the University of Wollongong began offering master's programmes in financial technology.

Foreign universities granted registration at GIFT City receive a five-year operational term, renewable for another five years. Institutions eligible for this opportunity must rank within the top 500 in the QS World Universities ranking or be deemed 'reputed' in their home countries.

The establishment of campuses by UK universities at GIFT City underscores India's growing appeal as an academic hub. Through strategic regulatory frameworks and partnerships, GIFT City provides a platform for globally reputed institutions to deliver quality education and foster research. This development will not only elevate the region's academic standards but also strengthen India's global collaboration in education and innovation.
