The central government has paused the Global City project in Ayyampuzha, part of the Kochi-Bangalore Industrial Corridor, citing a shift from its industrial focus to residential and real estate developments. Initially designed to complement the Industrial Manufacturing Cluster in Palakkad, the project envisioned IT hubs, financial institutions, and a tourism hub. Despite HUDCO's funding interest and land acquisition progress, concerns over its deviation from industrial goals stalled its approval. The state and central governments must collaborate to realign the project with KBIC's objectives, ensuring its industrial and economic potential is realized. Local demands for state intervention are growing.
The central government has temporarily halted the Global City project, a landmark proposal spanning 358 acres in Ayyampuzha under the Kochi-Bangalore Industrial Corridor (KBIC). The decision reflects concerns over its deviation from the prescribed focus on industrial activities, with an apparent emphasis on residential and real estate developments instead. The planners originally conceived the Global City project to complement the Industrial Manufacturing Cluster (IMC) in Palakkad, which the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs approved six months ago, envisioning it as a key node of the KBIC.
While the Palakkad IMC has progressed with the state government recently transferring 105 acres of land, the Ayyampuzha initiative remains stalled despite HUDCO expressing funding interest and initial central approval. The project's ambitious plans included establishing IT hubs, financial institutions, electronics firms, schools, hospitals, and office complexes. A plan to extend Phase III of the Kochi Metro from Aluva to Nedumbassery, with an additional extension to the Global City site, was also under consideration.
Acknowledging Ayyampuzha's tourism potential, authorities had hoped to integrate a vibrant tourism hub. However, the central government expressed reservations, noting a significant shift away from the industrial focus that forms the cornerstone of such initiatives. A senior official from the industrial department stated that resolving these issues demands concerted efforts between the state and central governments. With land acquisition nearing completion, demands for state intervention to revive the project are gaining momentum. Proponents argue that its successful execution requires strong collaboration and support from the central government.
The Global City project is approaching a crucial moment. Its revival demands decisive, cooperative action from both state and central authorities to ensure alignment with the industrial objectives of the KBIC, thereby unlocking its true potential.
