Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently inaugurated the much-anticipated Ken-Betwa river linking project, aiming to transfer excess water from Madhya Pradesh's Ken River to Uttar Pradesh's Betwa, benefiting millions in the Bundelkhand region. The project, costing an estimated INR 44,605 crore, will provide drinking water to over 6 million people across two states and irrigate 1 million hectares of farmland. Additionally, it will generate 103MW of hydropower and 27MW of solar energy.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently laid the foundation stone for the interstate Ken-Betwa river linking project, which will channel excess water from the Ken River in Madhya Pradesh to the Betwa River. The Prime Minister highlighted that this long-awaited project would open new avenues for prosperity in the Bundelkhand region.
Approximately 4.4 million people across 12 districts in Madhya Pradesh and 2.1 million people in 10 districts of Uttar Pradesh are set to benefit from the project. With an estimated cost of INR 44,605 crore, it is expected to impact 2,000 villages, covering one million hectares of farmland, and generate 103MW of hydropower and 27MW of solar energy.
The Ken-Betwa project was initially conceived following a feasibility study conducted by the National Water Development Authority (NWDA) in 1995 at a cost of INR 1,998.74 crore. A Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) was signed between Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, and the Union Government in August 2005, paving the way for a detailed feasibility report, which was completed in 2014. In 2023, the environmental clearance was granted, allowing the project to proceed.
He emphasised that river-linking projects would bring about lasting solutions to water scarcity. Modi also praised the ongoing success of schemes like the PM Kisan Samman Nidhi Yojana, which has benefited farmers in Madhya Pradesh.
In conjunction with the foundation stone ceremony, the Prime Minister launched the Omkareshwar Floating Solar Project and the Daudhan Irrigation Project. The Omkareshwar project, located in Khandwa district, was inaugurated virtually. He also laid the foundation stone for the Atal Gram Seva Sadans, a series of rural development initiatives aimed at improving infrastructure in the region.
The Ken-Betwa river linking project, a key infrastructure initiative, is expected to bring significant improvements to water availability and agricultural productivity in the Bundelkhand region. Despite some challenges, the project underscores the government's commitment to addressing water security, a crucial issue for the country's development, particularly in drought-prone areas.
