India's Union Tourism Ministry recently announced that 76 projects have been sanctioned under the Swadesh Darshan Scheme, with a total allocation of INR 5,287.9 crore, out of which 75 projects are now physically complete. The Swadesh Darshan Scheme, aimed at the development of theme-based tourist circuits, was revamped as Swadesh Darshan 2.0 for the creation of sustainable tourist destinations. Additionally, under the PRASHAD Scheme, 48 projects worth INR 1,646.99 crore are in development, and 40 projects have been approved under the Special Assistance to States for Capital Investment (SASCI) scheme. As a result, India has seen a significant rise in international tourist arrivals and foreign exchange earnings in 2023.
A total of 76 projects, with an allocation of INR 5,287.9 crore, were sanctioned under the Swadesh Darshan Scheme, with 75 of them now physically complete, as reported by the Union Tourism Ministry earlier this week.
The scheme, initially launched in 2014-15 for the integrated development of theme-based tourist circuits, was revamped into Swadesh Darshan 2.0 to focus on the creation of sustainable and responsible tourist destinations. To date, 34 projects under this revamped scheme have been approved, amounting to INR 793.2 crore.
The Ministry has introduced "challenge-based destination development" as part of Swadesh Darshan 2.0, inviting proposals for different categories such as spiritual and eco-tourism. A total of 42 destinations have been selected for development under various tourism themes as part of this initiative.
Additionally, 48 projects under the PRASHAD Scheme, at an estimated cost of INR 1,646.99 crore, are in progress, with 23 of them already completed. This scheme focuses on providing financial assistance for infrastructure development at pilgrimage sites.
The government has also sanctioned 40 projects under the Special Assistance to States for Capital Investment (SASCI) scheme, amounting to INR 3,295.76 crore, aimed at providing long-term, interest-free loans to boost capital investment in states.
India registered 18.89 million international tourist arrivals and 9.52 million foreign tourist arrivals in 2023. The foreign exchange earnings from tourism during this period amounted to INR 2,31,927 crore.
Overall, the government's efforts to enhance tourism infrastructure in India are paying off, with several major schemes focusing on sustainable development and religious tourism. The impressive growth in international tourist arrivals and foreign exchange earnings signals a promising future for India's tourism sector.
