The Rajasthan government is advancing two flagship projects, the Unity Mall and the Rajasthan Mandapam, to promote local products and economic growth. Located near Jaipur Airport, the Unity Mall has secured INR 200 crore, including INR 100 crore from the Union finance ministry, to showcase ODOP and GI-tagged products. Covering 15,000 square meters, it will also host training and promotional events. The Rajasthan Mandapam, inspired by Delhi's Bharat Mandapam, will span 40,000 square meters to position Rajasthan as a convention hub. RIICO, managing both projects, expects Unity Mall construction to start in February 2025, promising economic and cultural revitalization.
The Rajasthan government is making significant strides in promoting local products and enhancing economic development through two major projects: the Unity Mall and the Rajasthan Mandapam. Chief Minister Bhajan Lal Sharma recently reviewed the progress of these initiatives, which aim to support the 'Make in India' campaign and the 'One District One Product' (ODOP) initiative.
The Unity Mall, located near Jaipur Airport in the RIICO Fintech Park, is set to be a hub for showcasing unique products from each district of Rajasthan. The project has received substantial backing from the Union finance ministry, which approved INR 100 crore under a special assistance scheme. This funding is part of a total allocation of INR 200 crore for the mall's construction. The facility will cover approximately 15,000 square meters and will include shops dedicated to ODOP items, geographical indication (GI) products, and other local goods. Additionally, it will feature a common training center, classrooms, seminar halls, business meeting spaces, and an open-air theatre for promotional events.
Ajitabh Sharma, the principal secretary of industries, highlighted the importance of the Unity Mall in creating livelihood opportunities for local artisans and producers. The project is designed to facilitate better market access for these local products, thereby boosting the rural economy. The bidding process for construction contracts is expected to be completed by January 2025, with construction slated to begin in February 2025.
In parallel, the Rajasthan Mandapam is being developed as a larger convention center, inspired by the Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi. Covering over 40,000 square meters, this facility aims to host various events and conferences, further positioning Rajasthan as a key player in the hospitality and events sector. While the Mandapam project is still in its planning stages, the groundwork for the Unity Mall is already in progress, indicating a strong commitment from the state government to expedite development.
Inderjeet Singh, the Managing Director of RIICO, which is responsible for the development of both projects, confirmed that the administrative and financial sanction of INR 202 crore was approved last week. The agency has engaged the National Building Organization Consultancy (NBOC) as the project management consultant to ensure efficient execution. Singh expressed optimism about the timeline, stating that RIICO is working diligently to fast-track construction efforts.
These developments come at a time when Rajasthan is looking to enhance its service sector and attract more investments. The state government is also exploring the potential for a Global Capability Centre (GCC) on the 100-acre land at Fintech Park, which could further diversify the local economy and create high-skilled job opportunities.
Overall, the Unity Mall and Rajasthan Mandapam are not just infrastructure projects; they represent a strategic effort to empower local communities, promote regional products, and attract tourism and business to Rajasthan. As these projects move forward, they hold the promise of revitalizing the local economy and showcasing the rich cultural heritage of the state.
