The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has opened a new 180-metre signal-free road linking the SEBI Building to Avenue-5, significantly improving traffic flow in the bustling Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC). Completed in just 3.5 months, the project reduces congestion at key junctions and provides seamless connectivity for commuters from the Eastern Express Highway (EEH). The road's initial three lanes are now operational, with the remaining three set to open soon. The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has announced the inauguration of a signal-free road connecting the SEBI Building to Avenue-5. The new route passes beneath the BKC connector and Avenue-3 (WeWork), addressing a critical gap in the city's infrastructure. This 180-metre road was completed in an impressive 3.5 months, significantly ahead of its planned schedule, and is expected to alleviate traffic congestion at both the BKC One Junction and BKC Connector Junction. The launch event was attended by notable officials, including Joint MMRDA Commissioner Radhabinod Sharma, IAS, and Additional Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Anil Kumbhare. With this new route, commuters travelling from the Eastern Express Highway (EEH) now have three alternative paths to access BKC, substantially easing congestion and enhancing traffic distribution. The signal-free road allows vehicles to move seamlessly, reducing travel time to just 15 minutes for those commuting from the eastern suburbs. Currently, three out of the six lanes are open for traffic, with the remaining lanes expected to become operational shortly.
During peak hours, motorists face delays of over 30 minutes to traverse a distance of just four kilometres, with additional time needed for entry and exit. Ongoing infrastructure projects, such as the Mumbai Metro 2B and the Mumbai-Ahmedabad bullet train, have further compounded the traffic challenges.
Currently, four major routes facilitate entry and exit in BKC: Sion-Dharavi-Kalanagar, the Santacruz-Chembur Link Road, Taximen's Colony, and the BKC-Chunabhatti connector. The popularity of the BKC-Chunabhatti connector among motorists from Mumbai's eastern suburbs has led to increased internal traffic, especially during rush hours, necessitating the development of additional road infrastructure.
According to an MMRDA official, the road is anticipated to improve traffic flow and reduce travel times to prominent BKC landmarks, including the MCA Club, several consulates, and the MTNL junction.
This road initiative is a crucial step in addressing BKC's mounting traffic concerns, which stem from the area's growing commercial activity and extensive infrastructure development. By providing smoother access to key routes, the project enhances commuter convenience while reinforcing MMRDA's dedication to improving urban mobility. The efficient traffic dispersal achieved through this project is expected to bolster BKC's reputation as a premier business district.
Dr. Sanjay Mukherjee, IAS, Metropolitan Commissioner of MMRDA, remarked that the road's completion marks a significant step towards making BKC more accessible and commuter-friendly. He highlighted that the project exemplifies MMRDA's dedication to delivering infrastructure swiftly and efficiently. The road not only provides quicker access from the Eastern Express Highway but also enhances internal traffic dispersal, solidifying BKC's reputation as a global business hub.
