Excavation for a commercial building in Sector 15, CBD-Belapur caused a road cave-in near Mangal Tower, a residential high-rise, triggering panic and temporary evacuations. Although Mangal Tower's structure was unaffected, residents sought safety measures. Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) declared the building safe after inspection but requested a detailed technical assessment by Veermata Jijabai Technological Institute (VJTI). Legal action will follow based on the findings. The incident underscores the importance of adhering to construction safety norms and holding developers accountable to ensure urban safety and compliance, particularly in rapidly developing areas like CBD-Belapur.
Last week, excavation work for a commercial building in Sector 15, CBD-Belapur resulted in the cave-in of the drive-in area near Mangal Tower, a neighbouring residential high-rise. The sudden collapse caused significant panic among residents, prompting them to evacuate their homes for safety. The incident was first reported by Times of India (TOI).
According to Ranesh Kokate, Fire Officer at CBD-Belapur, the road adjacent to the building developed large cracks due to the excavation activities. Emergency services responded immediately, ensuring the safety of all residents. While the structural integrity of Mangal Tower remained unaffected, some residents chose to vacate their flats and temporarily stay with relatives. Adjacent residential complexes were not impacted by the incident.
The Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation's (NMMC) engineering department inspected the site and confirmed that the building was safe for habitation. However, as a precaution, the town planning department summoned the Veermata Jijabai Technological Institute (VJTI) team to conduct a detailed technical assessment. Somnath Kekan, an additional town planning officer, stated that the findings would determine the next course of action. The developer responsible will face legal consequences following the submission of the technical report.
The cave-in incident near Mangal Tower highlights the critical importance of adhering to safety norms during construction activities. While immediate measures ensured the safety of residents and structural integrity of the building, the involvement of experts from VJTI underscores the need for thorough assessments in such cases. Authorities must ensure accountability by initiating legal action against negligent developers, fostering safer urban development practices. This incident serves as a reminder to prioritise safety and compliance in rapidly urbanising areas like CBD-Belapur.
