The Indore Development Authority (IDA) has fast-tracked the long-pending 9.4 km MR-12 road, crucial for connecting the Bypass to Ujjain Road. So far, only 3.5 km is complete, with 31 brick kilns obstructing progress. The district administration has issued a seven-day notice for their removal, rejecting a three-month extension request. Key features include a 100m-long bridge and a 700m railway over-bridge. Set to ease congestion and support the 2028 Simhastha festival, the project reflects the administration's push for better infrastructure while balancing livelihoods and timely execution. The Indore Development Authority (IDA) is advancing the long-delayed construction of the MR-12 road, a significant infrastructure project aimed at improving connectivity between the Bypass and Ujjain Road. The 9.4 km stretch has faced numerous hurdles, resulting in the completion of only 3.5 km so far. To address one of the primary obstacles, the district administration has issued a seven-day notice to 31 brick kilns in Shakarkhedi and Bhangya, requiring their removal to clear the way for the road's construction. The brick kiln operators had sought a three-month extension to relocate, but the administration permitted only seven days, balancing the need for timely project completion with the livelihoods of those dependent on the kilns. Teams were formed to oversee the notices and ensure compliance, as the kilns posed a significant roadblock to progress. Once these are cleared, work will resume on the remaining 3 km of the road in Kailod Hala, Shakarkhedi, and Bhangya areas.
Key components of the MR-12 project include a 100-meter-long and 60-meter-wide bridge over the Kahn River and a 700-meter-long railway over-bridge (ROB) at the Kailod Hala railway crossing. These structures will enhance connectivity and ensure smooth transit along the route. The road's completion is expected to ease congestion on MR-10 and other city roads, improving traffic flow and reducing travel time for commuters.
According to IDA CEO RP Ahirwar, the fully operational MR-12 road will not only connect the Bypass to Ujjain Road via AB Road but also play a pivotal role in managing city traffic. Additionally, the road is expected to serve as a critical route for the lakhs of devotees anticipated to visit Ujjain during the Simhastha festival in 2028. For this reason, local authorities are prioritizing its completion by next year.
The removal of the brick kilns has been one of the most challenging aspects of the project, given the livelihoods involved. However, senior administrative officials emphasized that a balanced approach was adopted, ensuring a reasonable timeline for relocation while maintaining progress on the vital infrastructure.
The MR-12 road is an integral part of Indore's master plan and is expected to significantly contribute to the city's development. By enhancing regional connectivity and preparing for major events like the Simhastha, the project underscores the administration's commitment to improving urban infrastructure and addressing the city's growing transportation needs. With the renewed push to complete the project, the MR-12 road is poised to become a key asset for Indore's future.
