The much-anticipated redevelopment of the Rajaji Nagar (Chenkalchoola) colony has commenced, with Smart City Thiruvananthapuram Ltd (SCTL) at the helm of the initiative. Following an agreement with the contractor Subramaniam and Sons, initial groundwork has begun, representing a significant milestone in the phased effort to enhance living conditions for the colony's residents.
An official from SCTL confirmed that the bidder agreement has been signed, and preliminary work is underway. The official noted that two bidders had participated, and after a thorough evaluation, the contract was awarded to the lowest bidder. Construction is expected to gain full momentum within the next two weeks.
With a budget of INR 9 crore and a completion timeline targeted at nine months, the first phase will encompass the construction of 248 housing units, a stormwater drainage network, access roads, parking facilities, and community spaces, including recreational areas. Eighteen families have already been temporarily relocated to facilitate construction, with additional relocations planned as necessary.
The redevelopment project has faced delays over the past year, primarily due to limited bidder participation in initial tenders, restrictions stemming from the general elections' model code of conduct, and some opposition from residents. Originally, SCTL intended to temporarily relocate 189 families; however, in response to resident concerns, a smaller number is now being moved in phases.
The expansive 12.6-acre Rajaji Nagar colony currently accommodates approximately 2,000 families across 1,100 units. Although initially outlined as a three-phase project, the redevelopment will proceed gradually, with the first phase marking the beginning of significant upgrades to this long-established community.
