The Telangana government has initiated the Metro Rail Project Phase II, covering a total of 116 km, including a significant stretch from Shamshabad Airport. While field surveys are ongoing for this section, the remaining five corridors totalling approximately 76.4 km will be taken up immediately. Emphasising the project's importance in reducing traffic congestion and pollution in Greater Hyderabad, officials highlighted the successful completion of Phase I. The government has also reassessed and revised the Phase II proposals based on experiences from the first phase.
In a significant advancement for the proposed Hyderabad Metro Rail Phase II project, the Telangana government has granted administrative approval for the undertaking, which amounts to INR 24,269 crore. This project will proceed as a joint venture with the Central government, encompassing five Metro corridors that will span 76.4 km. The collaboration will be managed on a 50:50 basis between the state government, represented by Hyderabad Airport Metro Limited, and the Centre.
The municipal administration department, in a government order issued recently, announced that the Telangana government would finance 30% of the total project cost, which translates to INR 7,313 crore. The Union government is set to contribute INR 4,230 crore, while the public-private partnership component will provide INR 1,033 crore, representing approximately 4% of the overall project cost. The remaining 48% of the project financing, amounting to INR 11,693 crore, will be acquired through loans from international financial institutions, including the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), the Asian Development Bank, and the New Development Bank (NDB).
The state government has resolved to proceed with the Metro Rail Project Phase II, which will cover a total of 116 km, including a 40-km section from Shamshabad Airport to the proposed Fourth City (Skill University). As field surveys and other assessments are currently being conducted, this 40-km stretch will be addressed at a later date.
The government order indicated that the remaining Phase II project, consisting of five corridors with a total length of approximately 76.4 km, will commence immediately. These corridors include the Nagole-Shamshabad RGIA (Airport Corridor) at 36.8 km, Raidurg-Kokapet Neopolis at 11.6 km, MGBS-Chandrayangutta (Old City Corridor) at 7.5 km, Miyapur-Patancheru at 13.4 km, and LB Nagar-Hayatnagar at 7.1 km.
Officials noted that the state government is prioritising the Metro Rail project, as it aims to alleviate traffic congestion and reduce pollution levels in Greater Hyderabad. Phase I of the project, which encompassed three densely trafficked corridors of Hyderabad city and extended over 69 km at a cost of approximately INR 22,000 crore, has been successfully completed.
Reflecting on the lessons learned from Phase I, the state government has reviewed and reworked the previously approved proposals for Phase II.
The Hyderabad Metro Rail Project Phase II represents a critical step towards enhancing urban mobility and improving environmental conditions in Greater Hyderabad. By prioritising this infrastructure project, the Telangana government aims to address pressing transportation challenges while building upon the successes of Phase I. As the project progresses, it is expected to significantly benefit residents and commuters alike, setting a precedent for sustainable urban development in the region.
