Meghalaya is ready to begin surveys for the Pradhan Mantri Awaas Yojana - Gramin (PMAY-G), aiming to expand housing coverage under the extended scheme. With 6,354 surveyors deployed across 6,426 villages, the state plans to update the Awaas+ 2018 database, including excluded households, using eKYC authentication. Having achieved 60.75% completion of 186,283 approved houses since 2016, ongoing projects will conclude by January 2025. The initiative aligns with Meghalaya's developmental goals, integrating housing with education, healthcare, clean water, and sanitation to combat rural poverty. Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma emphasized stakeholders' engagement and comprehensive implementation to achieve 'housing for all.'
Earlier this month, Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma announced that Meghalaya is prepared to conduct surveys for the Pradhan Mantri Awaas Yojana - Gramin (PMAY-G). This readiness follows the completion of mapping surveyors to each village, ensuring seamless survey processes and updates to the Awaas+ 2018 list to include previously excluded households and villages.
The ministry of rural development has extended the PMAY-G initiative until 2028-29. According to an official statement, Meghalaya, having met its earlier targets, will be among the first states to launch new surveys. Since the scheme's launch in 2016, the state has approved 186,283 houses and achieved 60.75% completion, with 113,158 homes finished. Ongoing construction projects are expected to be completed by January 2025.
Through the State Rural Employment Society (SRES), under the C&RD department, the government has mobilised 6,354 surveyors across 6,426 villages to update the Awaas+ database using revised exclusion criteria and eKYC face-based authentication.
Housing has been identified as one of Meghalaya's five primary developmental goals. The government aims to combat rural poverty and establish standards for housing and related services. By leveraging PMAY-G alongside other schemes, the state is addressing key areas such as education, healthcare, clean water, and sanitation.
Chief Minister Sangma reiterated the government's commitment to achieving 'housing for all' while tackling poverty. He urged stakeholders to ensure comprehensive survey coverage and encouraged eligible households to prepare documentation and actively participate in the forthcoming surveys.
Meghalaya's proactive approach to PMAY-G underscores its commitment to rural development and poverty alleviation. By mobilising resources and leveraging integrated welfare schemes, the state is addressing multiple facets of rural deprivation. With its comprehensive planning and targeted outreach, Meghalaya is set to achieve its housing goals while creating a framework for sustainable rural progress. Stakeholders' participation and efficient implementation will be crucial in meeting these ambitious objectives.
