The project includes 210 metro cars, to be delivered as 70 three-car train sets, and a 15-year maintenance contract. These trains will operate in Unattended Train Operation (UTO) mode, serving three major corridors. The entire metro network will span 118.9 km, with delivery starting in January 2027 and completion by April 2029.

BEML Ltd, a distinguished Mini Ratna public sector enterprise under the Ministry of Defence, has been awarded a major contract worth INR 3,658 crore by Chennai Metro Rail Ltd (CMRL) for the design, manufacture, supply, testing, commissioning, and training for Standard Gauge Metro Rolling Stock (Electrical Multiple Units). In addition to this, the project also includes a 15-year comprehensive maintenance agreement, reflecting BEML's continued expertise in advanced metro solutions.

Under the terms of the contract, BEML is set to deliver a total of 210 metro cars, which will be configured into 70 three-car train sets (DMC + TC + DMC). These state-of-the-art metro trains will operate primarily in Unattended Train Operation (UTO) mode, which is the highest level of automation currently available for metro systems (GoA4), as outlined in a release. This advanced technology will ensure improved efficiency, safety, and a smoother transit experience for commuters across Chennai.

The metro trains will serve three key corridors within Chennai's expanding metro network. These are: Corridor 3, which stretches from Madhavaram to Sipcot, covering 45.8 km; Corridor 4, connecting Lighthouse to Poonamallee with a 26.1 km stretch; and Corridor 5, which will link Madhavaram to Sholinganallur, covering 47 km. The complete metro network will span a total of 118.9 km, including 76.3 km of elevated tracks and 42.6 km of underground tunnels.

The first of the 70 trainsets is expected to be delivered in January 2027, with the final trainset to be delivered by April 2029, marking significant milestones in the rapid expansion of Chennai's metro system. This project, expected to enhance urban mobility, will play a crucial role in meeting the city's growing transportation needs, improving connectivity, and providing a cleaner, more efficient mode of transport for the people of Chennai.

With this substantial order, BEML further solidifies its position as a leader in the design and manufacturing of metro solutions, contributing to the modernisation of urban transport systems across the country. The long-term maintenance contract also ensures that these advanced metro systems will operate efficiently for years to come, benefiting commuters and contributing to the city's sustainable development goals.

BEML's contract with CMRL marks a significant advancement in Chennai's metro infrastructure. The project will enhance urban mobility, improve efficiency, and contribute to the city's long-term sustainable development.
