The Smart Cities Mission has seen significant progress, with 13 out of 100 cities completing all projects, and 48 cities achieving over 90 per cent completion. Over 84,000 CCTV cameras and 713 km of cycle tracks have been installed. The mission has seen INR 17,303 crore invested in 714 ongoing projects, with 91 per cent of projects completed. The deadline has been extended until March next year, and the government has released INR 47,225 crore, of which 94 per cent has been utilised. Despite some delays due to legal issues, the mission has delivered major infrastructure improvements across cities.
Thirteen out of 100 smart cities under the Smart Cities Mission have completed all their planned projects, while 48 cities have achieved over 90 per cent completion, the Lok Sabha was informed earlier this week. According to the Union Minister of State for Housing and Urban Affairs, Tokhan Sahu, over 84,000 CCTV surveillance cameras have been installed, and 713 kilometres of cycle tracks have been developed across the 100 cities.
The minister also highlighted that 23 cities have completed over 75 per cent of their projects. Currently, 714 projects, amounting to INR 17,303 crore, are in progress. As of mid-November, work orders for 8,066 projects worth INR 1,64,669 crore have been issued, with 7,352 projects valued at INR 1,47,366 crore (91 per cent of the total) already completed.
Under the Smart Cities Mission, the central government has allocated INR 48,000 crore for the development of these cities. As of November 15, the Centre had released INR 47,225 crore to states and union territories, with INR 44,626 crore (94 per cent of the total amount) utilised so far.
Due to requests from various states and union territories, the deadline for completing the mission has been extended until March 31 next year. The minister attributed delays in some projects to factors such as legal issues. Regarding the works undertaken, Sahu noted that over 1,740 kilometres of smart roads have been either constructed or upgraded, and numerous classrooms have been developed across 2,398 government schools.
This ambitious initiative, launched in June 2015 by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, continues to transform cities, with several projects nearing completion and contributing to improved infrastructure and urban living standards across the country.
The Smart Cities Mission is on track to significantly enhance urban infrastructure, with many projects nearing completion. The extended deadline offers additional time for remaining initiatives, while substantial investments have already been made in vital infrastructure like roads, CCTV, and school facilities. This initiative continues to drive the modernisation of urban India, ensuring sustainable and improved living conditions.
