The Centre is preparing for the official announcement of the highly anticipated Neopolis IT township project in Technopark Phase-IV, Thiruvananthapuram. Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to unveil the INR 1,000 crore initiative soon. Part of the Union Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs' broader vision, the Neopolis project is one of eight such developments proposed across India, with Thiruvananthapuram being the only city selected from Kerala.

The state government has formed a nine-member joint committee, headed by the IT Secretary, to oversee the planning and coordination of the project. An official involved with the project mentioned that while the timeline for the project's commencement cannot be specified, it is a high-priority initiative for the Centre.

The Neopolis project is part of the larger Outer Area Growth Corridor (OAGC) in Thiruvananthapuram. The township will serve sectors like aerospace, electronics, software, and IT, and will include business facilities, residential complexes, shopping malls, recreational areas, and five-star hotels, creating a self-sustaining urban ecosystem.

Technological innovation will be a core focus of Neopolis, with an emphasis on emerging fields such as robotics, artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning, data analytics, blockchain, and the Internet of Things (IoT). The project aims to attract leading firms in these fields, promoting research, innovation, and economic growth in the region.

The project will be carried out through a Special Purpose Company (SPC), jointly established by Thiruvananthapuram Corporation, Andoorkonam Panchayat, Mangalapuram Panchayat, the Capital Regional Development Programme (CRDP), and Technopark. This collaborative approach will ensure that all stakeholders work together effectively.

Neopolis will complement another ambitious initiative at Technopark Phase-IV, called QUAD, which is also being spearheaded by the state government and Technopark. The state government received the proposal for Neopolis from the special officer of CRDP-II earlier this year and formed the committee ahead of the official announcement. It has also submitted a detailed proposal in response to the request for proposal (RFP) issued by the Union Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs.

The selected land for the project, located on the outskirts of Thiruvananthapuram, is strategically placed to take advantage of both existing infrastructure and future economic growth. The RFP was issued following the recommendations of the 15th Finance Commission, which allocated INR 8,000 crore as an incentive grant for the development of new cities in eight states, focusing on smart city principles. The CRDP's proposal, submitted in January 2023, identified the project site as meeting all the necessary criteria for this prestigious initiative.

The Neopolis IT township in Thiruvananthapuram promises to be a transformative project, fostering growth in high-tech sectors such as AI, robotics, and blockchain, while also creating a vibrant urban environment with residential, commercial, and leisure facilities. With the government prioritising this initiative, the project is set to attract leading firms, contribute to research and innovation, and enhance the region's economic development. The collaborative approach involving various stakeholders ensures that the development process is aligned with the broader goals of creating a smart, sustainable city.
