The establishment of the South Coast Railway (SCoR) Zone, with its headquarters in Visakhapatnam, is progressing as the East Coast Railway (ECoR) has invited e-tenders for constructing the General Manager's office complex. With an estimated cost of INR 149.16 crore, the 12-story facility is part of efforts to operationalize the long-awaited zone, which was first announced in 2019. The move addresses historical grievances of north Andhra Pradesh residents, who felt excluded since the formation of the South-Central Railway Zone in 1966. With 52.2 acres of land in Mudasarlova allocated for the project, and the Detailed Project Report under review, the new zone is poised to enhance connectivity and infrastructure in the region, fostering economic growth and transforming Visakhapatnam into a critical railway hub.
The long-awaited proposal to establish the South Coast Railway (SCoR) Zone, headquartered in Visakhapatnam, is set to move forward. The East Coast Railway (ECoR), based in Bhubaneswar, has issued e-tenders for the construction of the General Manager's office complex and related facilities in Visakhapatnam. The deadline for submitting bids is December 27.
A pre-bid conference will take place at 11 a.m. on December 2, with the bidding process opening on December 13. The GM's office complex will consist of 12 floors, including two basement levels, a ground floor, and nine additional floors, with an estimated construction cost of INR 149.16 crore.
Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw shared the tender notice on X (formerly Twitter) on Sunday. On November 19, in response to a query from K. Eswar under the RTI Act, the Railway Board indicated that the Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the South Coast Railway is currently under review. They also confirmed that 52.2 acres of land in Mudasarlova, Visakhapatnam, has been allocated to the Railways by the state government.
The announcement of the South Coast Railway Zone, with its headquarters in Visakhapatnam, was made by former Railway Minister Piyush Goyal in 2019. The people of north Andhra Pradesh have felt a sense of alienation since the South-Central Railway (SCR) Zone was established in 1966, as Srikakulam, Vizianagaram, and Visakhapatnam were not included in that zone.
The advancement of the South Coast Railway Zone represents a significant step toward enhancing infrastructure and connectivity in north Andhra Pradesh. By addressing historical grievances and fostering regional development, this project holds the potential to transform Visakhapatnam into a key railway hub alongside its well-established port. As the bidding process unfolds and construction begins, the region can look forward to improved economic opportunities and a renewed sense of inclusion within the broader railway network of India.
