The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) demolished a five-storey building in Gachibowli for being constructed without proper permissions. Built on a 50-square-yard plot, the structure posed safety risks after excavation on an adjacent plot damaged its pillars. The neighbouring plot owner failed to meet setback requirements, prompting a police case. GHMC is consulting legal experts to take further action against the building's owner, who had been paying utility bills despite lacking approvals. This incident underscores the challenges of unauthorised constructions in Hyderabad, with authorities pledging stricter enforcement of building norms to ensure safety in the city's rapidly expanding areas.
The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) demolished a five-storey building in Gachibowli on 20th November after it was found to be constructed without the necessary permissions. The structure, built two years ago on a 50-square-yard plot, consisted of four floors and a penthouse with 12 rooms, raising significant safety concerns.
The demolition was prompted after excavation work on a neighbouring plot damaged half the building's pillars. The adjacent plot, measuring 200 square yards, was being excavated without adhering to setback requirements, compounding the structural risks. GHMC officials confirmed that a complaint was lodged against the neighbouring plot owner, and the Madhapur police have registered a case.
The building's owner, who regularly paid utility bills for water and electricity, constructed the property without civic approval. GHMC is now consulting legal experts on further action against the owner. The incident highlights ongoing challenges in regulating unauthorised constructions in Hyderabad, particularly in rapidly growing areas like Gachibowli.
This case has also drawn attention to the lack of enforcement in ensuring compliance with building norms. Unauthorised constructions on small plots, combined with improper excavation and disregard for setbacks, pose a threat to public safety. Civic bodies are under pressure to strengthen oversight and penalise violations to prevent similar incidents.
GHMC's proactive demolition of the illegal structure sends a message about the importance of adhering to building regulations. Authorities have reiterated their commitment to addressing unauthorised constructions and ensuring safety standards in Hyderabad's expanding urban landscape.
