In a landmark initiative to address affordable housing shortages, 116 families received allotment letters during the Affordable Housing Project (AHP) ceremony at the IDCOL auditorium. Housing and Urban Development Minister and the chairman of the Bhubaneswar Development Authority (BDA), Krushna Chandra Mahapatra, distributed letters for three housing projects: Chandrasekharpur, Nilamadhab Awas, and Barunei Enclave. The transparent lottery system ensured fairness in the selection process. With ongoing projects and a comprehensive INR 8,000 crore plan for a 'New City' on the outskirts, the BDA aims to create sustainable living spaces for the urban poor, enhancing the quality of life in Bhubaneswar.
In a significant effort to provide affordable housing for slum dwellers, 116 families received allotment letters during an affordable Housing Project (AHP) ceremony held at the IDCOL auditorium. The allotment process was conducted through a transparent lottery system under independent observation.
Housing and Urban Development Minister Krushna Chandra Mahapatra, who also chairs the Bhubaneswar Development Authority (BDA), presented the letters to beneficiaries from three housing projects: 47 from the Chandrasekharpur AHP, 36 from the Nilamadhab Awas AHP, and 28 from the Barunei Enclave AHP in Subudhipur.
BDA officials confirmed that remaining houses from all projects will be allocated to eligible beneficiaries in phases. They are also actively pursuing plans for constructing homes and essential facilities, including drainage and intra-city transportation, within the Bhubaneswar development plan area, which encompasses 568 revenue villages and spans approximately 1,110 square kilometers.
According to Naik, six projects are currently underway under the affordable housing scheme for urban poor in Chandrasekharpur, Gadakana, Ghatikia, Shanti Nagar, and Subudhipur, with a total of 342 housing units already completed in Subudhipur.
He further detailed progress on other projects, citing the completion of 560 flats in the first phase in Shanti Nagar, 820 in Chandrasekharpur, and 960 units in the first phase of the Nilamadhab housing project, all of which have been distributed to 1,829 eligible beneficiaries.
Emphasizing the importance of strategic urban planning to accommodate the growing population, Minister Mahapatra highlighted the need for close collaboration between authorities and the public.
Additionally, the BDA has formulated an INR 8,000 crore plan for the development of a 'New City' on 821.964 acres on the outskirts of Bhubaneswar. According to Mahapatra, the land acquisition process for this project has already commenced. The New City will be located in the Malipada, Daspur, and Gothapatana areas, accommodating around 200,000 residents and aiming to become a solar city that relies on approximately 60% solar energy. As per BDA, a team from the Centre recently conducted a survey of the project site.
This initiative marks a crucial step towards alleviating housing challenges for slum dwellers in Bhubaneswar, reflecting a commitment to improving living conditions and community infrastructure. The collaboration between government authorities and citizens, along with strategic urban planning, is essential for the successful realization of these projects. As Bhubaneswar continues to grow, the development of affordable housing and sustainable urban environments will play a pivotal role in shaping a brighter future for its residents, ultimately contributing to the city's vision of becoming a world-class urban center.
