Gurugram's Municipal Corporation (MCG) has intensified enforcement of the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) to address deteriorating air quality. Within 24 hours, 54 fines totaling INR 3.4 lakh were issued, including INR 1.4 lakh for prohibited construction activities under GRAP-4. Joint Commissioner Pradeep Kumar led inspections, prioritising measures like anti-smog guns and road water spraying to combat dust pollution. However, residents in areas like New Palam Vihar expressed concerns over ongoing violations, urging stricter penalties. Gurugram's Municipal Corporation (MCG) has ramped up efforts to enforce the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) in response to worsening air quality. In just 24 hours, MCG issued 54 fines totaling INR 3.4 lakh for violations of the GRAP regulations. Pradeep Kumar, the joint commissioner of MCG, conducted inspections across various neighbourhoods to ensure compliance with GRAP rules. He emphasised the importance of adhering to these regulations, warning that any construction activity that violates the ban would result in serious penalties. The MCG is prioritising cleanliness in the city, with regular garbage collection being a key focus. Kumar explained that measures such as deploying anti-smog guns and spraying treated water on roads and trees are being implemented to reduce dust and improve air quality. Currently, 16 machines are operating at night to minimise dust pollution.
Despite these efforts, residents have expressed concerns about the ongoing construction activities in areas like New Palam Vihar and Sun City. Many believe that the penalties currently imposed are not enough to deter builders and homeowners from continuing their projects. Ajay Mehta, a resident of Sector 51, expressed frustration over the ongoing construction activities exacerbating poor air quality. He emphasised that fines for such violations need to be more substantial to create a meaningful impact.
In addition to addressing construction violations, MCG is taking a comprehensive approach to combat air pollution. The corporation is collaborating with local environmental organisations to monitor air quality levels and promote awareness among residents about the health impacts of air pollution. Educational campaigns are being launched to encourage the community to participate in reducing pollution, such as using public transportation, carpooling, and minimising the use of personal vehicles.
Experts suggest that a multi-faceted strategy is essential in tackling air pollution effectively. This includes stricter enforcement of existing regulations, public education on pollution sources, and community involvement in clean-up efforts. The collaboration between government bodies, residents, and environmental groups is crucial in creating a healthier environment.
As Gurugram continues to grapple with air quality issues, the MCG's efforts to enforce GRAP regulations and engage the community will be key in shaping the city's response to pollution. Residents hope that with increased vigilance and stronger penalties, the city can achieve significant improvements in air quality and overall public health.
