Kochi Metro Rail Ltd (KMRL) is set to begin construction of two additional stations on the Phase II Pink Line, following the recent land acquisition approval. The new Metro stations, Cochin SEZ and Chittethukara, will be part of the 11-station Pink Line connecting Jawaharlal Nehru (JLN) Stadium to Kakkanad. The Revenue Department has issued notifications for the acquisition of 0.235 hectares for the SEZ station and 0.1810 hectares for the Chittethukara station.

This development follows the commencement of construction at Infopark station, for which the government had earlier granted permissive sanction. The overall Pink Line project, spanning 11.2 kilometers, has a total cost of INR 1,957.05 crore, with Afcons Infrastructure awarded the construction contract for the viaduct. The contract, valued at INR 1,141.32 crore, has a projected completion timeline of 20 months.

The Pink Line will feature stations at JLN Stadium, Palarivattom Junction, Palarivattom Bypass, Chembumukku, Vazhakkala, Padamughal, Kakkanad Junction, Cochin SEZ, Chittethukara, Kinfra, and Infopark. This extension is expected to enhance connectivity to key areas like the Special Economic Zone (SEZ) and Infopark, contributing to the city's growing infrastructure.

The land acquisition for the new stations will be conducted under the Land Acquisition, Rehabilitation and Resettlement (LARR) Act, 2013. Additionally, the district collector will ensure that all necessary approvals under various environmental and zoning regulations, including the Conservation of Paddy Land and Wetland Act and the Coastal Zone Regulation Act, are obtained.

With INR 239 crore allocated to Phase II of the Kochi Metro project in the 2024-25 budget, construction work is already underway. This expansion is expected to significantly improve urban mobility in Kochi, especially in areas witnessing rapid development.
